Job Description, Responsibilities and Required Qualifications or Skills

Dr.Adam Fox’s lab is looking for technicians to help with shark and sturgeon research over the summer. Technicians will assist graduate students on one of three projects:

  • Atlantic coast sturgeon project: Based out of Darien, GA. Research focuses on long-term monitoring of Shortnose and Atlantic Sturgeons in the major coastal rivers of Georgia. Technicians will assist with gill/trammel netting of fish, trailering of small boats, data entry and QAQC, and equipment maintenance.
  • Atlantic coast shark project: Based out of Darien, GA. Research focuses on the diverse community of sharks and rays in coastal waters to assess habitat-use, population trends, and health characteristics of the animals captured. Technicians will assist with longlining and gill netting of fish, trailering of boats, data entry and QAQC, and equipment maintenance.
  • Gulf coast sturgeon project: Based out of Port St. Joe, FL. Research focuses on long-term monitoring of Gulf Sturgeon in the Apalachicola river, Florida. Technicians will assist with gill/trammel netting of fish, trailering of small boats, data entry and QAQC, and equipment maintenance.

Dates: May 18th-August 7th (start and end dates can be flexible)

SKILLS

  • Assist with operating and trailering research boats in estuarine systems (Must have valid driver's license)
  • Sampling for sturgeons using trammel nets/gillnets
  • Sampling for sharks and rays using gillnets and longlines
  • Data entry and QAQC
  • Maintaining field equipment
  • Some beach biking (shark project only)

Applicants will be trained in sampling procedures and equipment maintenance.

Applicants must be comfortable working on a boat and be able to endure intense field conditions (hot and/or windy conditions).  Applicants must be able to tolerate a variety of inclement field conditions including hot/cold weather, biting insects, and occasional rough water conditions. Applicants should also be able to work well in groups and cohabitate well with others in field housing.
