Deadline: Sat, 03/04/2023 - 12:00pm Employer: USGS Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center Job Field: Fisheries Job Type: Full Time Location: Montana Location Detail: Bozeman Job Description: This is a crew-lead position with increased responsibilities related to data collection, organization, and operational activities in addition to field data collection. This position offers a variety of fisheries experience and will almost entirely be focused on field data collection. Field activities will include capturing and marking native and non-native trout and other fishes in streams, gill-netting in lakes, snorkeling in lakes and rivers, tracking movements and habitat use of fish, water sample collection for environmental DNA, monitoring of stream temperatures and streamflow, survey of aquatic habitat and beaver structures, and collection of fish diets. Field work will occur in the Greater Yellowstone Area (Snake River and Yellowstone Rivers and tributaries) and the Great Basin in CA, NV, and OR. Incumbents will collect, record, and organize data using a variety of standardized methods and techniques. At times, the incumbent may be expected to travel to field sites and work independently. Field experience working in streams, lakes, or wetlands is preferred but not mandatory but previous field experience is mandatory. Other experience of benefit includes identifying various fish species, following survey protocols and recording data accurately and neatly. Must have a valid state driver’s license, be able to swim, and be able to operate vehicles. Qualifications: Work requires a high degree of safety consciousness and personnel must be constantly alert to physical and biological hazards. The incumbent must be in good physical condition to meet frequent physical hardships encountered in backcountry work. Work requires walking over rough, uneven mountainous terrain or through dense forests, driving vehicles, and occasional lifting of moderately heavy items. Incumbent will be carrying loads/packs of up to 50 lbs and hiking up to 10 miles per day. The incumbent will be working outdoors in a wilderness setting, camping and working in bear country, and may encounter extreme weather conditions and physical hardships. Travel of 20 nights per month may be required. Overnight camping for up to a week may be required. A PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL EXAMINATION WILL BE REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION. Salary: $10 – $26 per hour depending on experience. Benefits: May 20 through October 31, 2023. However, duration and start date and end date may change due to existing environmental conditions.
