Deadline: Sun, 02/12/2023 - 12:00pm Employer: University of Georgia Job Field: Fisheries Job Type: Seasonal, Temporary, Internship Location: Florida Georgia Location Detail: Darien, Georgia & Apalachicola, Florida Job Description: The Sturgeon Lab at UGA is conducting research on three species of endangered sturgeon in coastal Georgia and Apalachicola, FL. Ongoing projects in 2023 include collection of life history and habitat use data for Atlantic, Shortnose, and Gulf Sturgeons. The project dates are from May 15 through August 11, 2023. While these starting and ending dates are preferred, some flexibility is possible depending on the applicant's availability. Technician responsibilities will include the operation and trailering of small (17-24’) boats in riverine and coastal environments, fish sampling with gill and trammel nets, maintenance of acoustic receiver arrays, and data entry. Technicians will also be responsible for gear maintenance, including mending nets and minor boat and trailer repairs. Technicians work an average of 40 hours per week. Applicants must be able to tolerate a variety of inclement field conditions including hot/cold weather, biting insects, and occasional rough water conditions. Housing will be provided at both the Georgia and Florida locations. Technicians will live and work with graduate students assigned to the projects. Qualifications: Interest in fisheries science or a related field. Experience with gill nets, safe trailer and boat operation, and mechanical repair is preferred, but on-the-job training will be provided. Must be able to work well in a small group and share living space with the team.
