Job Description:

Sampling juvenile anadromous salmonid emigrants is an integral part of overall status and trend monitoring of threatened populations of salmon and steelhead. The individual chosen for this position will be one of two technicians who will work in rotating multi-day shifts to operate a rotary screw trap located on the South Fork of the Salmon River. This position is non-benefited, with a 5-month term of employment.

General Information:

Employee will maintain a juvenile fish trap on the South Fork of the Salmon River. Per diem and housing is provided while on duty. Employee will be expected to stay at the housing facility near the trap for up to 5 days with 2 days off, but schedule will vary. Employee will also be expected to conduct creel and spawning ground surveys and work weekends and holidays when necessary. SHARED CAMPER ACCOMMODATIONS AT PONDEROSA STATE PARK WILL BE AVAILABLE WHEN OFF DUTY OR WORKING LOCALLY.

Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities include:

- Handling, identifying, and PIT tagging juvenile salmonids

- Managing databases

- Maintaining the trap and all associated equipment

Other duties include:

- Assisting with related fisheries research and management activities (e.g., gill netting, electrofishing, conducting standard steam and lake surveys)

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: B.S. degree in fisheries, biology, or related field; or equivalent in training and experience. Individuals with experience in the above listed activities, and experience working independently will be given preference. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license.
