The individual chosen for this position will assist with anadromous harvest monitoring, leading a five-person snorkel crew conducting fish and habitat surveys (80%), and operating a rotary screw trap located on the South Fork Salmon River for multiple days in the spring and fall (20%). In June and July, the incumbent and crew will attend snorkel training and conduct angler surveys on two Chinook harvest fisheries. In July and August, the crew will complete three 8-day long hitches conducting fish and habitat surveys. Once the snorkel season has been completed (August 17th), the incumbent will input and manage all data collected during the season in an IDFG database. When in the field, the incumbent and crew will camp in remote locations. Most specialized equipment and camping gear can be provided by the Department when on duty, but personal sleeping bag and pad is recommended. Meals and camping equipment are provided when working in remote locations and staying overnight in the field. As a rotary screw trap tender, the schedule will typically be 5 days on and 2 days off but can vary in the spring and fall. Per diem and temporary housing will be provided while the incumbent independently maintains a rotary screw trap on the South Fork Salmon River. Weekend and holiday may be necessary. SHARED CAMPER ACCOMMODATIONS AT PONDEROSA STATE PARK WILL BE AVAILABLE WHEN OFF DUTY OR WORKING LOCALLY. Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities for snorkel crew lead includes (May 31st-August 17th): - Scheduling and preparing for the snorkel season - Angler surveys - Conducting fish and habitat surveys in back-country streams while leading a snorkel crew of 5 members - Resolving issues and problem solving - Adjusting the schedule to be efficient in the field - Communicating with staff in the office - Inputting all snorkeling data in an IDFG database Primary responsibilities as a trap tender includes (March 7th-May; October-November): - Handling, identifying, and PIT tagging juvenile salmonids - Managing associated databases (i.e., P4, Jtrap etc.) - Maintaining the trap and all associated equipment - Assisting with related fisheries research and management activities Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: B.S. degree in fisheries, biology, or related field; or equivalent in training and experience. The ability to maintain a positive attitude and uncompromising work ethic through uncomfortable conditions is very important. Individuals with experience in the above listed activities, and experience working independently and leading a small crew will be given preference. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license.
