Deadline: Mon, 05/30/2022 - 12:00pm Employer: University of Georgia Job Field: Fisheries Job Type: Seasonal, Temporary, Internship Location: Georgia Location Detail: Athens Job Description: Description: The Aquatic Ecosystem Health Lab at UGA is seeking interested and dedicated field technicians to work on a variety of field and laboratory projects to support our research. The technician will be part of a growing team of researchers evaluating freshwater mussel distribution and host fish use; as well as reservoir fish sampling to support research on cyanotoxins in fish tissue and water. Responsibilities: Technician responsibilities will include snorkel surveys for freshwater mussels, fish identification and sampling with boat and backpack electrofishing units, aquatic animal husbandry and aquarium maintenance, light microscopy, and data entry. Technicians will also be responsible for gear maintenance, including mending nets, minor boat and trailer repairs. Technicians work an average of 40 hours per week, and overnight travel (up to 3 nights at a time) is required. Applicants must be able to tolerate a variety of inclement field conditions including hot/cold weather, biting insects, leaches, and occasional rough water conditions. Qualifications: Qualifications: Interest in fisheries. Experience with fish electrofishing methods and identification, freshwater mussel survey techniques and identification, and/or aquatic animal care is highly desirable, but on-the-job training will be provided. Technicians must be strong swimmers and have snorkelling or SCUBA experience. Must be able to work well in a small group and share living space (e.g., hotels or camping) with the team.
