Job Description:

In this role, the Forest Carbon and Climate Manager is responsible for tracking the science on climate change and

forest carbon accounting and developing the Drax US sustainability approach to climate change. This will include:

• The tracking of the climate change science and the US response to this.

• Tracking and influencing processes around reporting and accounting land sector GHG emissions

• Develop processes for allocating forest carbon changes within catchment areas to wood pellets made by

Drax

• Further support the development of lifecycle analysis (LCA)-based approaches to assessing the forest

carbon impact of forest products, from not only forests but the entire supply chain of biomass and other

forests products.

• Recommending and tracking compliance with a climate change policy

• The development and execution of a climate-adaptation strategy for US Drax operations

• Participating in understanding the decarbonization efforts across Drax’s US operations and the impacts they

will have on LCA

• Responsible for linking energy consumption records with Drax Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reporting

requirements, including Scope 1,2 and 3 emissions

• Support the development and execution of consistent approaches for developing Drax carbon and climate

projections.

The position will support other Business Units in delivery of their carbon reduction plans, assisting with collection,

checking, analysis and presentation of carbon data.

This will enable Drax to fulfil its goal being a carbon negative company by 2030, its carbon reduction targets set for

2030 and formally Net-Zero by 2050.

The Forest Carbon and Climate manager will work very closely with the Drax BECCS team ensuring methodologies

used for pellet production is aligned with those used for BECCS and the broader DRAX group.

The role would be reporting to the Director of Sustainability U.S.

About the Role

• Ensure the US approach to climate change is in accordance with best science and industry practice and

aligned to carbon and climate change reporting across Drax Group.

• Track and evaluate science-based climate scenarios and sectoral decarbonization pathways to establish

their relevance to the Pellet operations decarbonisation strategy and the development of strategic options

for executing a net zero strategy. Analyse risks and opportunities, and communicate implications.

• Work with the Drax BECCS team to ensure consistency in approach

• Develop land sector carbon footprint by processing forest carbon data in accordance with forthcoming GHG

Protocol land sector and removals guidance

• Monitor and track trends in forest carbon and forest product market data to inform business of

developments in sourcing regions

• Develop forest carbon projections for major sourcing regions and sourcing regions of interest based on best

available data and consistent methodology

• Track science on the development of forest carbon Life Cycle Analysis approaches and support the

assessment of opportunities for deploying within The US

• Produce the climate risk assessments as and when required

• Monitor relevant developments in climate science and across various carbon accounting frameworks to

inform reporting approaches fort the US business

• Track and influence carbon accounting rules regarding the use of offsets, insets, and negative carbon

emissions in making claims of carbon neutrality, net zero and carbon negative, advising on how it impacts

on both the commerciality of pellets and delivery of Drax corporate targets.

• Lead or support external consultancy projects related to Drax’s carbon interests to support decarbonisation

and carbon reporting strategies for The US

• Support in external stakeholder engagement within carbon accounting and Net Zero related associations

and other groups pertinent to US operations

• Perform green house gas life cycle analysis of forest sourcing areas

• Develop approaches for land and forest carbon modelling of wood fibre supply chains, in line with latest

science

• Assess forest carbon impact of new pellet plants and the affiliated supply chain proposals

• Compare climate impact of pellet production with alternative uses of wood fibre

• Standardise the collection of carbon and GHG data across US operations to include the necessary

breakdowns for group level half year and full year ESG reporting

• Support individual business units in the delivery of their carbon reduction plans by assisting with data

collection, checking, processing and presentation.

• Support to develop new approaches for collecting, processing, and tracking of Scope 3 carbon data,

particularly with regards to logistics, OPEX and CAPEX emissions

• Maintain US operations inventory of emissions factors for GHG calculations

• Develop and maintain presentation materials for the carbon positive unit

• Development of graphics to improve the visualisation of carbon data

Qualifications:

About You

• Experience handling carbon data and knowledge of carbon standards (e.g., GHG Protocol)

• Excellent numerical skills with proven experience handling large data sets

• Accomplished user of data processing software including Microsoft Excel and Power BI

• Qualified to degree level – preferably in related field such as sustainability, climate change, or other related

fields

• Extensive knowledge of Life Cycle Analysis methodologies and processes relevant to biomass energy,

including supply chain emission modelling, estimation of direct and indirect land use change emissions,

counterfactual modelling, and approaches for calculating forest carbon emissions

• Knowledge of corporate emission reporting standards (e.g., GHG protocol) and voluntary carbon market

standards

• At least 4 years experience working in the fields of carbon accounting and carbon strategy

• Proven success defining and developing approaches to carbon accounting

• Good communication and team-working skills

• Confident self-starter with proven ability to manage own workload

• Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders

• Experience managing multiple projects concurrently

• Confident communicator and influencer; Ability to interpret and simplify complex information to various

audiences including senior leadership and key external stakeholder

Periodic Travel to Drax offices and to attend relevant off-site meetings and workgroups as necessary
