Forest Geospatial Analyst

We are searching for an experienced Forest Geospatial Analyst at our Headquarters facility in Tuscaloosa, AL.

The Westervelt Company is committed to sustainability, with over 600,000 acres of forest land under management in the US South. The Forest Geospatial Analyst position will work in the Land Information Services group in the Forest Resources Division focusing on supporting the management of forest resources on company lands using geospatial tools and techniques. This position will aid in sharing, creating and managing largely geospatial forest data in internal and 3rd-party systems stored within enterprise databases and file systems.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Create and manage company forest management data depicting current forest conditions (e.g. stand bound, inventory, etc.) and past/future activities.
  • Create and manage custom automated geospatial data tools written primarily in Python as well as other programming languages.
  • Create and share custom map products (hardcopy and digital) with stakeholders.
  • Grow divisional use of online and mobile geospatial tools for improved efficiencies.
  • Perform analyses on remotely sensed data (e.g. imagery, LiDAR, etc.).
  • Manage ESRI licenses and software installs on stakeholder PCs.
  • Continuously improve processes and provide training and support to ensure the effective deployment and use of forest management data and tools.
  • Support The Westervelt Company's conformance with certification requirements and support management systems that enable the advancement of stewardship efforts.
  • Work on special geospatial-oriented projects as requested.
Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, GIS, Geography, Soils Sciences or Agriculture with a strong geospatial component
  • 3-4 years relevant work experience
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Proficient writing skills to prepare professional reports
  • Work well in teams, both as a support member and leader
  • Problem solver with the ability to quickly troubleshoot complex problems
  • Highly motivated and strong verbal communication skills
  • Available for limited travel not to exceed 10% of the time
  • Natural resource-focused geospatial data creation and management experience required
  • Significant experience using ESRI products (ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS online)
  • Knowledge of enterprise database systems

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience coding Python, SQL and/or R
  • Familiarity with Shiny web applications builder
  • Knowledge of silviculture, forest mensuration, timberland appraisal, growth and yield models, timber supply and demand modeling and forestry operations
  • Experience in processing remote sensed data (imagery or LiDAR)
Salary:
The base salary range for this position is $61,000 - $91,500. Actual base salary is based on the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate.
