Position Description:

The Forest Improvement Analyst will provide forest genetics and silviculture analysis and support to Westervelt Woodlands focused on leveraging value and quality throughout an integrated forest management system. Lead tree improvement breeding and testing activities, forest management cooperative trials, and internal silviculture testing and performance analysis. Provide soils, remote sensing, prescription, and other technical support to forest management plans across four Woodlands Regions encompassing over 500,000 acres of company-owned timberland in the Southeast.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead genetic breeding and testing through the Tree Improvement Program to include coordination, communication, test planning, establishment, maintenance, and measurement.

  • Support cooperative and internal silviculture testing and operational trials, wood quality testing, genetic breeding, and Woodland Forest management performance evaluation and analysis.

  • Produce silviculture, soils, and financial analysis products to support Region Foresters timely, accurate, and effective planning and execution of annual forest management processes such as reforestation, nutrient management, and competition control.

  • Woodlands resource for forest health, integrated pest management, soils, nutrient management, and other key inputs encompassed in silviculture guidance documents.

  • Provide expertise regarding data collection, management and analysis including testing and trials, forest management metrics, remote sensing, and GIS data in cooperation with Forest Resources enabling groups and other staff.

  • Assist Forest Improvement Manager and Region Foresters in efforts toward applied research solutions including trial/test design and measurement, data collection, analysis, and dissemination.

  • Serve as a Westervelt representative to forest genetics, silviculture, and other cooperatives including Tree Improvement Program, Forest Health Cooperative, Plantation Management Research Cooperative, and others.

  • Provide technical support to Forest Improvement Manager for seed and seedling sales as needed.

  • Continuous improvement resource for GrowEx or other projects and initiatives regarding silviculture, nursery, and orchard operations.

  • Provide direction and supervision to the Orchard Coordinator and/or Forest Regeneration Coordinator as required.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Agriculture, Horticulture or related field

  • Advanced in Microsoft Office Suite

  • Minimum of three years in silviculture, forest management or relevant field

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Knowledge of Data Science and statistical analysis

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Self-motivated and detail oriented

Preferred Experience:

  • Master's degree forestry/silviculture

  • Proficient in statistics and data, R, SAS, Minitab, and etc.

Salary:
The base salary range for this position is $68,600 - $102,900. The actual base salary is based on the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate.
