Vermont Youth Conservation Corps (VYCC) is seeking Pro Forest Projects Crew Leaders and Members to work on Conservation Crews and make a difference in communities throughout Vermont. Pro Forest Projects Crews will work to improve forest health through timber stand improvement and tree release projects. These crews will also work to remove invasive species and work with foresters on forest management plans. Crews will use chainsaws to complete projects, felling, bucking, and limbing trees. 

Pro Crew Leaders and Members gain technical skills to help them be competitive in their next adventures while building a new network of colleagues. A successful Pro Crew participant is able to work in challenging conditions, complete high-quality work, be a supportive member of their crew, and work well both independently and as a part of a small team. If you are excited to develop your technical skills, work alongside other conservation professionals, and have a positive impact in Vermont, this position is for you.

For leaders this position will run from May 30th until October 31st, 2022. For crew members this position will run from June 6th until October 31st, 2022. This crew will operate on a hitch schedule (for example, 5 days on, 2 days off OR 9 days on, 5 days off). This position requires long days outdoors in the elements.

Qualifications:

Required Leader Qualifications

• At least 21 years of age

• Excellent time management, organizational, and communication skills

• Experience in risk assessment and being responsible for the health and safety 

of others

• Experience in providing and receiving feedback, and creating a culture of 

learning and growth

• Willingness to undergo a criminal background check

• CPR Certification & Wilderness First Aid (if needed, COVID permitting, VYCC 

provides a WFA course pre-season)

• Valid driver’s license with good driving record for at least 3 years

• USFS Level B Sawyer/ Game of Logging Level 3 or ability to complete training 

prior to start date

• Prior experience with felling of moderate difficulty including ability to plan for 

and navigate hang-ups, directional felling, and side/forward leaning trees

• Proficient in local species identification

Required Member Qualifications

• Be at least 20 years of age (there is no upper age limit)

• Willingness to undergo a criminal background check

• Ability to travel to project sites throughout the state

• Exceptional time management, organizational skills, and attention to detail

• Prior chainsaw experience and training, including experience with simple 

felling and bucking (we will provide Game of Logging 1 & 2 at during training)

• Interest in forestry and timber stand improvement work

• CPR Certification & Wilderness First Aid (if needed, COVID permitting, VYCC 

provides a WFA course pre-season)

Work Environment

Leaders and Members spend most of their time outdoors, working with their crew while also interacting with project sponsors, community members, and VYCC staff. Some positions require camping with the crew.

Salary:
$670/week for members; $740-785/week for leaders
