The Forest Ranger is a critical roal that protects our valuable forest resources by providing wildfire prevention and suppression, including responding to and actively fighting wildfires with heavy equipment.  The Forest Ranger will also support resource management through assistance with compliance activities such as site preparation, planting, and seedling survival inventories.

 

How will you contribute:

  • As the principal operator of the fire suppression unit, you must be able to respond to wildfires in accordance with the Resource Unit fire management plan.  During periods of high fire danger, you must be in close proximity to fire unit and land base.
  • Perform fire prevention activities for the Resource Unit such as maintaining fire breaks, maintaining road rights-of-way for fire control, controlled burning, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with the Resource Unit team in assisting with fire management plan development and implementation.
  • Assist Resource Managers with contract supervision of fire prevention activities.
  • Demonstrates safe working habits.
  • Responsible for fire unit maintenance and repair, budgeting, and related recordkeeping.
  • Assist the Resource Unit when necessary with contract compliance activities related to silvicultural and harvesting activities.
  • Assist with basic inventory projects, seedling survival, and data collection.

 

 

 

 


 

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years’ experience in heavy equipment operation (2 years firefighting experience preferred)
  • CDL Required
  • Wildland fire fighting techniques, operation of crawler tractor during fire suppression, fire behavior, state BMP’s, basic equipment maintenance, general forestry land management practices
  • Must be able to traverse difficult terrain and be able to lift heavy items as required.  Must have or be willing to obtain a Certified Prescribed Burner certificate. 

Physical Requirements:

  • This position requires extensive outdoor work in varied terrain and weather conditions. Candidates must be able to walk long distances, carry equipment, perform sustained physical exertion, including measurements, brush clearing, or fire suppression, maintain stability on uneven surfaces, and operate machinery, power tools, and motor vehicles.
