Job Description:

This is a 12-month, full-time, non-exempt, benefitted position (40 hours/week) reporting to the Head of the Department of Forest Resources. The position includes major involvement in engaged learning activities, particularly laboratories and field trips, in support of the BS in Natural Resource Management degree program.

The primary duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

Preparing, setting up, and issuing materials and equipment for use in student laboratory exercises and exams.

Assisting in the operation and maintenance of instructional laboratories, workshops, and tool room.

Assisting with the maintenance and management of the college’s forested areas used in the Natural Resource Management program, including the Nature Study Area, utility tract, and pitcher plant bog.

Assisting the Forest Manager with class and lab-related projects and, as needed, management activities on the John W. and Margaret Jones Langdale Forest.

Student tutoring, especially with regard to use of equipment and specialized software.

In conjunction with the instructors, participating in the planning, implementation, development, and improvement of laboratory exercises and laboratory exams.

Conducting an inventory of all laboratory-related equipment and supplies at the beginning and end of each semester and working with the Department Head to purchase needed equipment and supplies.

Driving vehicles for off-site laboratories and field trips, some of which are overnight.

In conjunction with the school’s Mechanical Superintendent, properly maintain vehicles used by the department.

Properly maintaining equipment used by the department.

Developing a laboratory transportation schedule each semester.

Maintaining an updated inventory of the vertebrate collections, including pulling and storing specimens needed in laboratory activities.

Supervising student workers assigned to the department.

Representing the Department of Forest Resources at various field days, conferences, and meetings, when needed.

 

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

BS in Forestry, Wildlife Management, or a related field

2-3 years of relevant experience

Excellent communications skills, demonstrated technical excellence, and the ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Experience with a variety of field equipment used in forest resources management.

Ability to adapt to a changing work environment, including work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Desired Qualifications:

Class A Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) with a Passenger endorsement

Private Pesticide Applicator license
