Job Description, Responsibilities and Required Qualifications or Skills

POSITION:  Forester

LOCATION: Northeast Florida / Southeast Georgia

RESPONSIBILITIES: Primary responsibilities will be field work consisting of forest inventories, timber and boundary marking; collecting GPS field data, in addition to other detailed organizational skills with files and paperwork. The field time work may consist of up to 30% out of town work annually.  Periods of travel may exceed 30% during the year with the changing workflow throughout the year.  This travel percentage is not likely to change much annually with promotion and career development. 

REQUIREMENTS:   We are seeking highly motivated individuals with the ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment.  A minimum two year forestry degree is required. An additional 2 to 3 years’ experience in a similar forestry field is preferred. Computer skills and other digital skills will be necessary. Good written and verbal communication skills are required. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Includes the ability to traverse distances over one mile on uneven terrain; work in outdoor forested areas for extended periods in a variety of environmental conditions; occasionally carry 5 to 10 pounds of equipment over longer distances for extended periods of time.  Must be able to work independently during a work week and complete tasks in a timely manner. Must have an insurable driving record.

EXPECTATIONS: Fast learner who embraces new technology in a digital format.  Must be a self-starter and willing to pursue SAF’s Candidate Certified and/or Certified Forester, GA Registered Forester, and UAS licenses.  Field forestry work remains at the core of what we do as consulting foresters.  The goal is to develop and enhance skills in other core areas for promotion and career development. 

SALARY: Commensurate with experience and education.

PAID VACATION:
First Year – 3/4 day per month
Second Year - Ninth Year – 1 day per month
After Ninth Year – Twentieth Year – 1-1/2 days per month. After Twentieth Year – 2 days per month.
(Up to 5 days of vacation can be carried over from year to year – any unused vacation time over and 
above 5 days carried over will be forfeited if not used in the year accrued.)
PAID HOLIDAYS:
New Year’s Day Independence Day Labor Day Memorial Day Thanksgiving Day Christmas Day
2 Floating Holidays (Eligible after one year anniversary)
PAID SICK LEAVE:
First Five Years – 5 days per year. After Five Years – 7 days per year.
Can accumulate 60 days of unused sick leave, unused sick leave over and above 60 days will be 
forfeited. All unused sick leave will be forfeited when employee leaves company.
PAID FUNERAL LEAVE:
Up to 5 days of paid leave for death of family member. Up to 5 days paid funeral leave may be 
granted for attendance of funeral for others depending on relationship of deceased to employee.

MAJOR MEDICAL INSURANCE:
Effective June 1, 2002, F&W changed to a PPO, which means your deductible and coinsurance will 
depend on your medical provider being in the network. Hospitalization and medical insurance for 
employee is paid by Company. Dependent coverage is available, but the employee pays dependent 
premium.  Effective 4/1/24: Dependent (One additional person) premium $893/month; Family premium 
$940/month. Coverage will begin on the first day of employment.

GROUP LIFE INSURANCE:
Group Life Insurance, which includes Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage, in the amount of 
the employee’s annual salary up to a maximum of $50,000. The Company pays the premium for each 
eligible employee.

LONG-TERM DISABILITY:
The company pays Long-Term Disability that pays 60% of the employee’s wages up to a maximum of 
$10,000 per month effective first day of employment.

DENTAL INSURANCE:
Group Dental Insurance available to employees with Company paying a small amount and employees 
paying balance
through Cafeteria Plan. Effective 4/1/24: Employee premium $37/month; Family premium $95/month.

PREMIUM CONVERSION (CAFETERIA) PLAN:
Allows an employee to pay for certain benefits with pre-tax rather than after-tax dollars.

FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNT PLAN:
Allows an employee to utilize the tax benefits currently available for Unreimbursed Medical 
Expenses and Dependent Day Care Expenses by deducting a maximum of $3200/per year for unreimbursed 
medical expenses and $5000/year for day care expenses from pre-tax dollars through payroll 
deductions. Effective May 18, 2005, IRS modified the application of the rule prohibiting deferred 
compensation under a Section 125 Cafeteria Plan and provided for a grace period immediately 
following the plan year to use benefits or contributions.  Effective Plan year 2015, F&W has 
adopted the carryover method, which allows participants to carry over up to $640 of unused funds to 
the next plan year.
BOOT ALLOWANCE:
The current period allowance is $599. The boots and chaps allowance is based on a 24 month period. 
The allowance may be used on one purchase or on multiple purchases dated within the current 24 
month period.

401(k) RETIREMENT PLAN:
Allows an eligible employee to save into the 401(k) Plan (before federal income taxes) from 1% up 
to the maximum amount allowed by law.  Effective 1/1/01, every employee participating in the 401(k) 
Plan is 100% vested in all contributions made to their 401(k) Plan.  Employees are eligible to 
participate in the 401(k) Plan at the time of employment, there is no waiting period. Effective 
1/1/2022, F&W will match 100% up to the first 4% of an employee’s deferral. Employees must defer a 
minimum of 4% to receive the full company match.
