The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) – Fire and Resource 
Assessment Program is currently looking to fill three (3) positions of Forestry Aide as a Forest 
Inventory & Analysis FIA Program Data Collection Crew Members under the direction of the of Forest Health Research & Monitoring Program Manager (Senior Environmental Scientist - Supervisory). Each position works closely with an experienced FIA Data Collection crew leader on a team with other aides and professionals. The incumbents serve as members of a field going data collection team consisting of 2-4 people. The incumbents collect forestry and forest health monitoring data on permanently established fixed radius plots, following standardized protocol and field procedures, assist in locating field plots using topographic maps, compass, GPS, and aerial imagery, and perform data accuracy and data quality checks. The forestry and forest health monitoring data is collected using standardized tools. Types of data collected includes, but is not 
limited to, tree growth and mortality; forest typing, stand size and stand age estimates; 
anthropogenic treatments and/or natural disturbances evaluations; soil attributes; and understory vegetation composition. The incumbents will use botanical keys to identify plants encountered on plots and will assist with the collection and preservation of specimens. Travel to plot may include automobile, foot, ATV, motorcycle, boat, small aircraft, helicopter, or horse as necessary to access field plots. The incumbent must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.

CAL FIRE’s Fire and Resource Assessment Program assesses the amount and extent of California's forests and rangelands, analyzes their conditions and identifies alternative management and policy guidelines.

If using education to meet Minimum Qualifications, please provide a copy of your transcripts showing completion of at least 12 semester units or 18 quarter units from a recognized accredited college or university in forestry or fire science, natural resource management, conservation, or a closely related subject.

This position requires Respiratory Protection Program (RPP) Clearance prior to the incumbent being hired.
 

The incumbent may be required to wear respiratory protection equipment, including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). The use of such equipment may place a physiological burden on the incumbent that varies with the type of equipment used, the job and workplace conditions in which the equipment is used, and the medical status of the incumbent. As such, California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (CalOSHA) requires that the incumbent be annually medically cleared to be fit-tested for respiratory protection equipment. This clearance process consists of a comprehensive medical evaluation including a review of the incumbent’s medical history, a complete physical examination, and vision, hearing, spirometry, and exercise treadmill tests. Duties involve field work requiring physical performance calling for above-average ability, endurance, and superior condition, including occasional demand for extraordinarily strenuous activities in emergencies, under adverse environmental conditions, and over extended periods of time; requires running, walking, difficult climbing, jumping, twisting, bending and lifting over 25 pounds; and the pace of work is typically set by the emergency situation.
