Job Description, Responsibilities and Required Qualifications or Skills

Clare Conservation District is seeking a Forestry Assistance Program (FAP) Forester to cover Clare and
Gladwin Counties. The position requires a minimum of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in forestry,
preferably from a Society of American Foresters accredited university program. This is a state grant-
funded position, renewed annually. The salary ($46,000-$50,000) will be commensurate with the candidate’s
experience and education. Applicants that have attained or in the process of completing SAF Certified Forester or
Candidate Certified Forester may qualify for a higher starting wage. A $5000 cash health stipend paid out quarterly
will be provided. As well as an annual clothing/field equipment allowance. This position also qualifies for paid
sick, vacation and holiday hours.
 

The basic requirements for the Forester position are:
Education requirements:
o Bachelor’s or master’s degree in forestry from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited
university program is preferred. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in forestry from a university program
that is not SAF accredited will also be accepted, but not preferred.
o Applicants that maintain the Certified Forester or Candidate Certified Forester credential, regardless of
degree, will be accepted.
o Degrees in related fields such as fisheries, biology, wildlife, environmental science, horticulture or
associate degrees will not be accepted (unless applicant possess the Certified Forester or Candidate
Certified Forester credential).
 

Basic understanding of forest measurements, planning, and management.
Basic understanding of soil science, both physical and chemical properties.
Excellent communication skills (writing, public speaking, interacting with landowners).
Computer proficiency. GIS and Microsoft Excel experience is highly preferred.
Ability to read various types of maps (aerial, topography, soils) and navigate through remote areas.
Ability to collaborate with associated governmental agencies and non-governmental groups to achieve mission-
driven short- and long-term goals.
A valid Driver’s License and a reliable vehicle.
