Job Description:

The GIS Forester will provide oversight, direction, assistance, and guidance for Wyoming State Forestry Division geospatial, remote sensing, mapping, forest inventory, and drone programs; in cooperation with Division staff, local, state, and federal partners involving interagency cooperation, management planning, technical assistance, outreach and education. This position provides expertise and leadership in all geospatial, mapping, and inventory matters: database design, field data collection, integration of technologies, data analysis, systems management and maintenance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function performed at the job level.

 

 

Works cooperatively with leadership, program managers, and field staff to ascertain system and design needs, identify efficiencies, develop best management practices and enhance role of geospatial technologies in achieving Division mission and objectives.

 

Develops, maintains and enhances geospatial data systems including, collection protocols, data standardization, data quality control, data updating storage and archiving, and user support.

 

Compiles geospatial data for use by Division staff and cooperators, and assists with the creation of maps and data products in support of grant requests, project proposals, outreach, and reporting purposes.

 

Applies scientific and analytical processes to the planning, design and implementation of new and improved methods to utilize spatial data to enhance forest and resource management.

 

Analyzes new and emerging technologies and provides guidance for integration into existing systems and advises on acquisition of new equipment, software, products, and services.

 

Provides training, technical assistance, and support to Division personnel, contractors, and cooperators. Develops content for educational materials, online resources, and social media. Conducts training, workshops, and presentations and prepares materials for presentation to State leadership, partners, cooperators and the general public.

 

Qualifications

 

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

 

-Preference may be given to applicants with a strong understanding of geospatial databases and data analysis procedures.

-Preference may be given to applicants with good organizational skills, managing multiple projects, and meeting deadlines.

-Preference may be given to applicants with an analytical mindset with, problem solving skills, excellent communication skills, and collaboration skills.

-Preference may be given to applicants with extensive forestry field experience.

-Preference may be given to applicants with extensive forest inventory experience.

 

KNOWLEDGE:

 

-Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), ArcGIS desktop or ArcGIS Pro

-Knowledge of Public Land Survey System (PLSS), land titles and records, and land conveyance

-Knowledge of drone technology, software, rules and regulations

-Knowledge of forest management and planning, silvicultural techniques, best management practices and use of technology

-Knowledge of common forest health issues affecting various tree species

-Knowledge of fuels reduction techniques and strategies

-Knowledge of Wildfire suppression concepts

-Skills in presenting to various audiences

-Excellent interpersonal skills

-Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with diverse groups

-Ability to exercise independent judgement and work with minimal supervision

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Forestry)

 

Experience:

0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Forestry) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Forestry Specialist

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Possesses and maintains a valid driver's license

 

OR

 

Education & Experience Substitution:

4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Forestry)

with acquired knowledge at the level of a Forestry Specialist

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Possesses and maintains a valid driver's license

 

 

Necessary Special Requirements

 

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

Some in-state and national travel required. Field work may need to be performed in all seasons under a range of conditions.
