Job Description:

Assists the Forestry Resource Administrator in the administration of the land management program of Goethe State Forest (GSF) utilizing sustainable multiple-use forest management practices. Responsible for the preparation and revision of the Resource Management Plans, as well as coordinating and supervising activities encompassed by the plans. These activities include: an all-season fire management program (including the prevention and suppression of wildfires); forest inventory (including rare, threatened and endangered plant and animal species); timber sales; supervision of all reforestation activities; management of ecosystem restoration activities. Supervises groundskeeping areas including, road maintenance and repairs; establishment and maintenance of recreation sites; information and educational efforts; and administration of public safety issues on the state forest.

 

Responsible and accountable for managing budget/dollars/resources (staff, vehicles, computers, cell phones, etc.) of any assigned programs in an efficient and accountable manner. Responsible for ensuring that assigned program areas have operational procedures and processes which result in accountability and compliance with Forest Florida Service (FFS) and department policies and procedures.

 

Provides wildfire and emergency response support as directed. Assists in the development of smoke management, wildfire prevention, prescribed fire, pre-suppression burning plans and hazardous fuels mitigation. Assists in the enforcement of Florida’s open burning laws and regulation.

 

Responsible for the administration and implementation of marking and selling timber on GSF and inspecting all active timber sales and marking contracts to insure that the terms of these contracts are not violated. Responsible for supervision of all reforestation activities on those State Forests.

 

Responsible for maintaining documentation of state forest activities by keeping records of timber sales, stand descriptions, prescribed burns, reforestation, endangered and threatened species, and occurrence and control of exotic species; calculation of field data and assembling it into permanent files for use in the land management program; and developing, implementing, and maintaining the GIS database.

 

Responsible for the protection and management of the red cockaded woodpecker and other endangered/threatened species and for the control of dangerous exotic species.

 

Maintains contact and a working relationship with cooperating agencies (e.g., Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Division of Historical Resources, Suwannee River Water Management District, Southwest Florida Water Management District, Department of Environmental Protection, county and city governments), environmental organizations, organized user groups, and neighboring landowners to ensure cooperative efforts and input into the management of the forest.

 

Keeps abreast and knowledgeable of forestry topics, ecosystems management, and rare and endangered species laws. Maintains current knowledge of the resource management policies contained in the State Forest Handbook and is responsible for abiding by them.

 

Performs other related duties as assigned, which may include the handling of revenue.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university with a major course of study in forestry and three (3) years of forestry experience; or

 

A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in forestry and two (2) years of forestry experience; or

 

Experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

 

Requires possession of a valid driver license.
