Description

Northern Stewards has immediate openings for full and part-time Forestry Technicians. Northern Stewards serves private landowners throughout northern Vermont.  Technicians will be based out of Waterbury, VT conducing forest inventories and provide forest management planning services.  Clients that use Northern Stewards are dedicated to productive stewardship and often interested in ecological forest management, wildlife habitat management and multiple forest uses, most of whom are enrolled in Vermont’s Use Value Appraisal program and other Conservation programs. The position will require travel throughout northern and central parts of the state with opportunities for partial remote office work if desired. Responsibilities

Forestry technicians will work under the direction of a Lead Forester and be responsible for conducting forest inventories, assist in preparing management plans, GIS mapping, and providing management activity prep work and lay-out including boundary marking, tree marking or other forest services. The Forestry Technicians will be required to travel to work sites often alone or with others, orient to and in remote forest locations, complete forest related tasks at times working with forest owners, loggers and other professionals. Additional responsibilities based on experience. 

 

Required Qualifications

·        Ability to travel, with vehicle and valid driver’s license. 

·        Ability to work and by foot, efficiently travel in remote forest conditions, in inclement weather often in rugged terrain carrying daily supplies. 

·        Ability to navigate to locations with GPS, maps, and compass.

·        Ability to identify Vermont trees and shrubs. 

·        Familiarity with forest inventory methods, including variable radius plot sampling.  

·        Familiarity with Microsoft word, excel, Arc GIS. 

Desired Qualifications

·        VT Forester License or willing to work to licensure. 

·        VT licensed pesticide applicator or willing to work toward licensure

·        VT NRCS TSP certifications or willingness to work toward certification. 

·        Familiarity with Vermont’s Use Value Appraisal Program
