Job Description:

Brief description of the positions:

FIA Forestry Tech Crew Member-

The incumbent will serve in a permanent seasonal position as a Forestry Technician with the U.S. Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis program. The Forest Inventory and Analysis Program reports on the status of the nation’s forest resources and tracks change as it occurs across the landscape. This position has the primary responsibility of collecting field data.  The data collection requires familiarity with forestry practices, knowledge of forest principals, and the ability to interpret field manuals. Field work will require strenuous physical effort while navigating to remote research sites over uneven terrain while working on steep, brushy, slopes in all weather conditions, this daily routine is both physically and mentally demanding with work going from early spring to early winter. The position requires long hours and extensive travel. An important aspect of the position is the ability to work well with others.  Our crews operate remotely for long periods of time in small 2-3 person crews that do not change in composition. Strong interpersonal skills are a major component of success.

 

Urban Inventory:

FIA Forestry Tech-Urban Crew Member

The incumbent will serve in a permanent seasonal position as a Forestry Technician with the U.S. Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis program Urban Inventory.  The Urban FIA position will be primarily conducting tree and vegetation surveys in the urban environments of Portland, OR and San Diego, CA, ranging from densely forested city and regional parks to vacant city lots, sidewalks and beautification areas. The familiarity with ornamental flora is also preferred but not required.  Extensive landowner outreach and communication is required. The position will start and be based in Portland, with the expectation to work ~2 months in continuous travel status in San Diego. Interested candidates should select  Portland, OR as their duty location.

Duties

  • The following responsibilities are listed at the GS-6 full performance level.
  • Use standard forestry equipment such as clinometer, increment borer, laser range finder, and logger's tape in order to measure tree diameter and height.
  • Read topographic maps and use Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment, aerial photographs, and a compass to locate field study areas and plots.
  • Record field measurements utilizing a portable data recorder.
  • Plan and carry out forest mensuration data collection projects.
  • Use botanical keys or plant association guides to identify plants to species level.
  • Identify tree species, understory vegetation, and forest pests and pathogens.
  • Assess recorded readings and measurements to identify inaccurate, untimely, incomplete or irrelevant data.
  • Edit and load field plot data using designated computer programs.
  • Follow instructions and standardized procedures and protocols to collect forestry, botanical, and/or geographic measurements and data.
  • Write summaries of site visits for a natural resource monitoring project.
  • Communicate with people inside and outside natural resource management organizations regarding logistics for field work.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:



GS-05 Level: 
One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level. Specialized experience at this level is defined as a minimum of 52 weeks performing ALL of the following:

  • Collecting natural resource data in a field-based setting
  • Assisting with interpretation of standardized procedures and/or protocol in the collection of natural resources data
  • Assisting with identification of vegetation using field guides or botanical keys

OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.



OR A combination of education and experience listed above.



GS-06 Level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level. Specialized experience at this level is defined as a minimum of 52 weeks performing at least three of the following:

  • Collecting forest inventory or forest ecology data in a field-based setting
  • Interpreting and applying standardized procedures and/or protocol in the collection of natural resources data
  • Identifying plants using botanical keys or field guides
  • Summarizing natural resource data in written reports

OR One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position in fields such as Forestry, Ecology, Botany, and Environmental Science. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.



OR A combination of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience as described above.



Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Notice of working conditions:

Field sites are generally in remote locations and may be located significant distances from roads or trails. Work in the forest environment is in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, and covered with vegetation. Temperatures vary from above 100 degrees F to below freezing. Risks include snake or insect bites and stings, contact with animals or poisonous plants, etc. Rain, snow, wind, or dust may be encountered. Work requires use of boots, gloves, goggles, and hardhat; other safety equipment may be required. Work in remote field camps or hotels with overnight travel required may be as high as 40-80% of the time. Vehicle camping and backpacking may be required. Moderate risks or discomforts such as flying in helicopters, travel by boat, ATV, motorcycle, stock animal or horses, and living in a camp in close quarters may be required.

This employee will be guaranteed 36 weeks of full-time work; however, there may be a possibility to work more. You will then be placed in non-pay / non-duty status for the remainder of the year.
