Job Description:

This position is located on a Forest Service unit performing a variety of duties in support of the unit’s trail program.

Major Duties

Serves as a member of a trail maintenance team, to maintain, repair, and build trails throughout the Forest Service unit and improve recreational access to forest lands and protect the land from resource damage. Builds trails with gravel and associated materials, restores impacted areas, and replaces signage as needed. Constructs a variety of trail structures such as turnpikes, boardwalks, retaining walls, and rock features.

Prepares construction materials, ensures proper tool maintenance, and reports work completed.

May complete trail logs, condition, and prescription surveys.

Adheres to regulations concerning trails maintenance specific to the Wilderness Act by using traditional tools such as cross-cut saws while working in the wilderness. Patrols wilderness to ensure that areas are operated, used, and maintained in accordance with wilderness management plans.

Oversees routine maintenance of trails at dispersed recreation sites including cleanup and naturalizing. May interact and work with forest visitors, trail partner organizations, and volunteers. Employee is expected to carry out work with a team and occasionally independently.

Job involves daily driving in a Forest Service vehicle, use of hand tools, chainsaws, and other trail maintenance equipment. Personal protective equipment including hardhats, gloves, and boots are required. The work requires walking and climbing in steep, uneven terrain, exposure to adverse weather and insects, performing physical labor, bending, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds or more. The work is performed outdoors where there is exposure to extremes of weather and temperature.

 

Season

The position start date is May 20th and goes through October 19th.
