Job Description:

The Hazelton Lab at UGA is conducting research on freshwater mussel species in Georgia and South Carolina. Ongoing projects include collection of population dynamics and habitat data for state listed species and investigating sediment toxicity and environmental determinants of mussel health. More than one technician position may become available.

Responsibilities: Technician responsibilities will include the collection of field data in stream systems, maintenance of gear and vehicles, maintenance of laboratory based aquatic habitats, and data entry. Work will involve deployment and collection of concrete mussel silos, collection of sediment and water samples, assistance with sediment toxicity trial and tactile snorkel surveys in stream and river systems. Technicians will work an average of 40 hours per week. Applicants must be able to tolerate a variety of inclement field conditions including hot weather, cold water, and biting insects.

Qualifications:

Interest in fisheries and/or aquatic systems. Experience with freshwater mussel identification, sampling methods and life history is welcomed, but on the job, training will be provided. Must be able to work well in a small group. Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 lbs.

Salary:
Starting salary at $13.25 hourly. Housing provided when in field away from Athens
