About Jekyll Island Authority:

The Jekyll Island Authority (JIA) is a self-supporting Authority of the State of Georgia responsible for the overall operation and stewardship of Jekyll Island State Park with a commitment to maintaining the delicate balance between nature and humankind.

Position Summary:

The Georgia Sea Grant State Fellow will primarily support the Jekyll Island Authority’s coastal predator conservation program, with a focus on project management, research, land management, education, and development of policies and guidelines related to habitat restoration. The candidate’s time will be split between fieldwork and office duties. Based on interests, strengths, career goals, and motivation, the JIA Wildlife Biologist will work with the candidate to develop specific jobs duties and an independent project with potential for publication.

Position Duties:

1. Weekly (2-3 days) – Contribute to the management of eastern diamondback rattlesnake (EDB) ecological research program on Jekyll Island.

a. Radio-track 10-12 individuals

b. Manage, update, and further develop existing database

c. Optional – Analyze data and lead a publication related to EDB natural history, population dynamics, health, or habitat

2. One day weekly or biweekly – Collaborate with JIA partner The Rattlesnake Conservancy to further the mission of education and conservation of rattlesnakes and their habitats.

a. Education, public outreach, community engagement

b. Marketing, Fundraising, networking

c. Optional – Captive husbandry

3. Monthly – Assists with other predator monitoring programs including alligator and bobcat monitoring.

4. Term – Participate in planning and preparation for the development of a future wildlife habitat corridor and ecological restoration of former golf course land.

5. Other opportunities for engagement, contribution of ideas, and professional growth in the categories of land management, wildlife research, policy development, and restoration can be developed in consultation with the JIA Wildlife Biologist and Director of Conservation.

1. Contribute to awareness and positive impressions of the work of the Jekyll Island Authority and the Georgia Sea Grant Program by adhering to the standards of both programs and demonstrating competence and productivity to achieve positive results.

2. Ensure that activities are carried out in keeping with the JIA mission, vision, and conservation plans.

3. Ability to manage projects with attention to quality, completeness, and detail.

4. Strong work ethic and commitment to deadlines.

Qualifications:

Eligibility: Applications may be submitted by a graduate student close to completing their degree (Masters, Ph.D., or J.D), or within a year of their graduation, in a field related to conservation, management, protection, stewardship, public policy, or law of marine or coastal environments, or areas that impact marine and coastal environments. Applicants should address their degree of interest and experience in either marine/coastal/watershed science, natural resource management, public policy or law. Fellows must complete all degree requirements before starting the fellowship.

Position qualifications:

• Must be enrolled as a graduate student in a related field or within one year of having completed graduate degree requirements.

• Radio-tracking or strenuous field experience required.

• Plant identification skills desired, or ability and willingness to learn.

• Excellent oral and written communications skills and the ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Highly organized and able to juggle multiple demands in a dynamic and multi-faceted organization.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and applications required. • Proficiency using ArcGIS preferred.

• Ability and willingness to travel locally. Valid driver's license and personal vehicle needed.

• Ability and willingness to be present in-office during business hours unless JIA or GA Sea Grant policies and procedures dictate otherwise.

• Positive attitude with a desire to learn and contribute tangibly to advancing institutional goals.

• Ability and willingness to utilize a personal computer and phone for fellowship assignments is desirable but not required.

Salary:
$35,000
Benefits:

The successful candidate will be hired as a full-time fellow for 40 hours per week with a August 2022 start date. The expected fellowship term is 12 months from the start date. The fellow will be assigned a desk and network access at the Jekyll Island Authority Conservation Program offices at 200 Hopkins Avenue, Jekyll Island, GA 31527. $35,000 annual salary. The candidate will also be certified through The Rattlesnake Conservancy’s venomous snake handler safety course.
