Job Description:

Larson & McGowin is seeking a qualified individual to join our Technical Services team, which is involved in various data management, analysis, and consulting projects throughout the southeastern US and internationally. Primary responsibilities will be to assist in GIS data creation and management. This person will coordinate and work with both internal land management personnel and outside clients to meet desired objectives. The GIS Technician will support the forest management planning team through spatial visualization of information pertinent to the decision-making process. There will be opportunities to work with the forest inventory/harvest scheduling as well as the analytical teams as occasions arise. This position reports directly to the Larson & McGowin GIS Manager.

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

 

• Process information from surveys, plats, GPS, and LAS files and integration of that

data into the Silvics 2.0 land management software suite or other platforms as

necessary.

• Utilization of aerial photography, remotely sensed, and other pertinent ancillary data

to inform stand delineation and attribution.

• Create presentation quality maps and exhibits.

Qualifications:

Qualifications and Abilities:

 

Required

 

Applicant should have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, or

Forestry with a GIS emphasis.

 

Competency with common GIS applications (ESRI, QGIS, etc.) and associated file

types (e.g. shapefiles, geodatabases, geotiff, etc.).

 

Ability to effectively communicate in a professional manner and identify problems,

evaluate solutions, seek guidance/assistance where necessary, and communicate

results.

 

Ability to work independently and within a team environment as necessary.

 

Preferred

 

Understanding of land ownership principles and public land survey systems, as well

as non-Jeffersonian systems.

 

Understanding of and ability to accurately utilize Coordinate Geometry (COGO),

Aliquot, and related tools within a GIS in the production of land boundaries as

described from deeds, legal descriptions, surveys, etc.

 

Experience with relational databases and/or any coding languages a plus (e.g. SQL,

R, Python).

 

Knowledge of Forestry and/or Natural Resources including common terms and

activities.
