Job Description:

The Wildlife Conservation Section is offering one seasonal position for June 2023- November 2023. The employee will primarily be conducting line-transect surveys for gopher tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) on various properties in South Georgia as part of a crew of three seasonal employees. Applicants must be willing to work for long days (up to 10 hours) under physically challenging conditions (e.g., hot days walking through mixed habitats). Travel to study sites will be by state vehicle, and travel expenses will be reimbursed. Lodging will be provided during surveys, and housing may be available outside of travel. Nearly all work is in the field. Individuals with an interest in gopher tortoise conservation and management are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have a valid class C driver’s license. Applicants should be able to work in field conditions where encounters with snakes, alligators, biting insects etc. are possible. Applicants should be in good physical condition. Applicants should be comfortable performing some computer-based work and have some knowledge of basic science, ecology, wildlife biology, and the use of Microsoft packages such as Word and Excel. Preference may be given to applicants with knowledge of reptiles and amphibians native to the Southeastern US.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to individuals who have experience with gopher tortoises and conducting field surveys. Some experience using a GPS is also preferred.

$13.00 working 30-40 hrs/week
