Job Description:

Position description: The School of Renewable Natural Resources and Department of Entomology at Louisiana State University Agricultural Center are seeking applications for two M.S. assistantships starting as early as 1 August, 2022. The assistantship is half time for 12 months and includes an annual stipend of $28,000.00 and full tuition coverage. Graduate fees are not included and are the student’s responsibility.

Project: The M.S. students will be working with the principal investigators, Drs. Michael Kaller and Rodrigo Diaz, in collaboration with the USGS Wetlands and Aquatics Research Center, Gainesville, FL, to conduct a horizon scan for potential invasive aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates through the Organisms in Trade pathway. This horizon scan seeks to assign risk to potential species currently intentionally and unintentionally imported to the United States through the live animal trade. The research will involve extensive investigation of the literature, coordination and collaboration with state, USDA, USFWS, USGS, and academic experts, and development of a priority list of species for monitoring. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to develop an independent research project within the scope of invasive aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates.

The positions will be available until qualified applicants are selected. Application reviews will begin 8 July 2022.
