The assistantship is half time for 12 months and includes an annual stipend of $28,000.00 and full tuition coverage. Graduate fees are not included and are the student’s responsibility. Project: The M.S. students will be working with the principal investigators, Drs. Michael Kaller and Rodrigo Diaz, in collaboration with the USGS Wetlands and Aquatics Research Center, Gainesville, FL, to conduct a horizon scan for potential invasive aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates through the Organisms in Trade pathway. This horizon scan seeks to assign risk to potential species currently intentionally and unintentionally imported to the United States through the live animal trade. The research will involve extensive investigation of the literature, coordination and collaboration with state, USDA, USFWS, USGS, and academic experts, and development of a priority list of species for monitoring. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to develop an independent research project within the scope of invasive aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. Qualifications: Qualification Requirements: BS in natural resources management, entomology, aquatic biology, fisheries or wildlife management, or related biological field; experience with comprehensive management reporting; experience with database management and programming; ability to work well independently or within teams. Importantly, applicants must be willing to work collaboratively with invasive species experts from a variety of backgrounds. Applicants must have 3.0 overall undergraduate GPA or a 3.5 in the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate courses. Completion of GRE with satisfactory scores is preferred. Applicants must have a valid U.S. driver’s license or be able to obtain the same within 60 days of start. Overnight travel is required.
