Deadline:
Employer:
University of Missouri

Job Field:
Forestry
Job Type:
Assistantship
Location:
Missouri
Location Detail:
Columbia, Missouri
Job Description:

A Master of Science Research Assistantship is available in the School of Natural Resources, University of Missouri with advisor Dr. Benjamin Knapp (Associate Professor of Silviculture). The successful applicant will sample known old-growth sites comprised of mixtures of shortleaf pine and upland oaks across Missouri and Arkansas. Structural attributes such as tree diameter distributions, abundance of coarse woody debris, forest floor accumulation, and regeneration abundance will be summarized. In addition, age demographics will be determined with tree cores. Variation in these characteristics will be attributed to topography and soil conditions. This project is in close collaboration with the US Forest Service, Northern Research Station and will provide opportunity to work with a team. Results of this work will inform baseline conditions for old-growth pine-oak stands and will contribute to broader efforts to define mature and old-growth forests and develop recommendations for best management practices for these forest types.
