Position Summary

Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary (GRNMS) involves a full-time Education & Outreach Specialist to support the outreach and education programs and activities. Working with the GRNMS team, under the direction of the superintendent and in coordination with the GRNMS Education Coordinator, support development and administration of education and outreach programs and activities at the Ocean Discovery Center located in Savannah, GA, as well as distributed events. The primary responsibility is delivering education and interpretation programs at the GRNMS Ocean Discovery Center. The specialist will also develop GRNMS specific formal and non-formal environmental education/interpretive programs for in-person and virtual events.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Ability to communicate effectively for the purposes of coordinating activities; consulting with professional and technical experts; and securing cooperation from others.
  • Experience working in visitor centers or similar environments.
  • Solid Background training and managing volunteers.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability and willingness to speak before a variety of audiences.
  • Experience developing, leading, and evaluating environmental educational programs and developing program projections.
  • Ability to innovate practical solutions to problems as they arise.
  • Ability to use computer software programs provided.
  • Ability to distinguish among competing priorities and balance complex and demanding workloads; organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to occasionally work irregular hours; prepare reports and records.
Physical Demands
  • Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally to move objects.
  • More than 50% of the typical workday may be spent walking and standing.
  • Driving as needed to perform job duties.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with interpretive based visitor’s centers.

Experience supporting federally funded programs and/or events.

Salary:
$45,000-$50,700
