Job Description:

The Virginia Department of Forestry is looking for a Hardwood Forester to work with landowners to plan and implement hardwood management practices on conserved lands, focusing on those under conservation easement. Work with managers of public lands and area foresters to plan and implement similar work on properties without conservation easements. Work will generally occur in a geographic area of southcentral to southwestern Virginia between Charlotte, Allegheny, and Tazewell counties. The successful applicant will manage budgets, handle contracting, and supervise work completion.

Qualifications:

Knowledge in silviculture, forest measurements, prescribed burning, and forest health; experience in technical and professional forestry work; ability to work independently; excellent organizational skills; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with personnel from various state and federal agencies, cooperators, and the public; public speaking skills and experience; demonstrated excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skill; valid driver's license; ability to negotiate different types of forested terrain on foot; ability to travel around the state and stay overnight on occasion; and experience with and ability to use PC and Microsoft Office software required.

At least 2 years experience in hardwood management. Experience with ArcGIS Pro. Knowledge of wildfire suppression and watershed protection techniques
