Job Description:

The U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Upper Midwest Water Science Center (UMid WSC) is pleased to announce we are seeking to fill two positions in the Groundwater and Watershed Modeling Team. The positions are open to Recent Graduate Hydrologists. One position will be for an entry-level hydrologist [GS-5/7; minimum starting salary $37,695 / $46,696], and the second position will be for a hydrologist with advanced degree or more experience [GS-11; minimum starting salary $69,107]. The new hydrologists will work as part of a dynamic team on a variety of projects. The Groundwater and Watershed Modeling Team applies analytical and numerical modeling, field methods, and machine learning techniques to studies on issues including groundwater/surface-water interaction, transport of contaminants and nutrients in groundwater systems, model uncertainty estimation, and groundwater-resource evaluation. The new employees will join a creative and collaborative group of scientists that are distributed across our 3-state center (Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota). These positions have the choice of duty stations in either Lansing, MI, Madison, WI, or St. Paul, MN.

Qualifications:

We are seeking two Hydrologists with experience and interest in groundwater or water-resources modeling. Duties for both positions may include working with team members to support modeling projects using scripting in R or Python for data preparation, model analysis, and application of machine learning techniques; creating graphics, writing, and presenting results to technical audiences, stakeholders, and the public; and applying analytical and numerical models to groundwater quantity and quality problems. Hydrologists at the GS-11 level also will develop and lead projects in collaboration with the team and colleagues in the Upper Midwest Water Science Center.

These are term Hydrologist GS-5/7 or GS-11 positions that are being filled through the Pathways Recent Graduate Program. This program allows the positions to be converted from a term to a permanent position between years 1-4 of employment given successful completion of the program and job performance. The GS level you should apply for depends on your level of education and experience; typically, a relevant Bachelor’s degree would qualify you for the GS-5/7 position, and a relevant PhD would qualify you for the GS-11 position. To qualify for the Pathways Recent Graduate Program, you must be within 2 years of graduation from a qualifying educational institution, or currently enrolled with plans of graduating by December 31, 2023. Please read the education and other requirements carefully in the USAjobs announcement.
