POSITION: Inventory Forester

 

JOB TYPE: Limited-Term, Full-Time, Hourly

 

LOCATION: Tennessee (Knoxville, Oak Ridge, Cookeville, Sevierville)

 

TERM: Eligible for 6 or 9-month term

Steigerwaldt employs a staff of over 50 people, with offices in Tomahawk and Hayward, Wisconsin; and Marquette, Michigan.

 

 

 

We are currently seeking limited-term, full-time Inventory Foresters located in the state of Tennessee, predominantly working in the area of the Cumberland Plateau . This role is responsible for providing project support in the state of Tennessee, with a focus of forest inventory production. Project support is needed during peak production time, which is tentatively September 2024 - March 2025. This is considered an entry-level position, although previous professional experience is helpful. Individuals in this role must be located in Tennessee.

 

 

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

-Inventory data collection with necessary level of speed and precision dependent upon project requirements

-Detailed tree data recording of field observations

-Forest inventory data management and quality control

-Field project logistics and planning

-Field hardware and software setup, support, and management

-Final inventory product development

-Carbon and forest inventory field leadership

-Utilizing sub-meter GPS for a variety of applications including timber sale establishment, plot location collection, and wetland boundary recording

-Stand reconnaissance and silvicultural planning

-Periodic travel on project may exceed ±50 percent (in state)

-Other duties as assigned

PREFERRED SKILLS

 

-Desire to develop a career as a professional forester in a fast-paced and diverse consulting business

-Working towards or earned a 2 or 4-year degree in forestry or natural resource management

-Ability to work independently in varied settings, both in the field and with clients and other professionals

-Superior written and oral communication skills

-Competent with Microsoft Office software

-Experience with GPS data collecting and processing

-Experience with ESRI GIS software and GIS mapping and data collection principles

-Ability to travel and conduct overnight work away from home base – travel up to 25-40 percent or more

-Current valid driver’s license with personal vehicle suitable for forestry work (mileage is reimbursed)

-ATV certification

-A team player who is confident, respectful, curious, flexible, and able to work with other professionals in a growing, successful, and respected business

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

This position is remote-based and is roughly 95 percent field work and 5 percent office work.

 

 

COMPENSATION

 

Wage commensurate with experience.

 

 

POSTING DATE

 

July 19, 2024. Position will be filled within one to three months. Interviews will be scheduled throughout this time period. Expected start is August 2024. Please note that these positions may be filled sooner, as there is flexibility in the start date.
