Specific duties include maintaining cultures of lab organisms (zooplankton, phytoplankton, parasites, and fish), training, managing, and scheduling undergraduate researchers, ensuring compliance with environmental safety, Biosafety, and IACUC standards, maintaining equipment, updating protocols, and purchasing lab supplies. Percentage of time 50 Duties/Responsibilities Conducting experiments under the supervision of Dr. Strauss. These experiments will support the research goals of the lab, with a focus on community and disease ecology. Experiments include trait assays on individual zooplankton, indoor and outdoor mesocosm experiments that manipulate composition of aquatic communities, and terrestrial field experiments in grassland communities. Some experiments are likely to include Guinea worm parasites, which are risk-group 2 organisms Percentage of time 30 Duties/Responsibilities Leading field surveys. Specific duties include sampling communities of zooplankton, their parasites, and environmental conditions in local ponds, lakes and reservoirs in the Athens area. The field survey typically involves weekly sampling trips from February to May. Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities Uploading and analyzing data from experiments and field surveys. Percentage of time 5 Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Position Summary The Strauss lab in the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia (https://strausslab.ecology.uga.edu/) is recruiting a full-time lab manager to begin July 2, 2024. The Strauss lab studies disease and community ecology in the context of global changes including biodiversity loss, climate change, and environmental eutrophication. The lab primarily studies communities of zooplankton and their parasites in aquatic ecosystems. The incumbent will be responsible for leading field surveys in local ponds and reservoirs, conducting indoor and outdoor experiments under the supervision of Dr. Strauss, and managing day-to-day operations of the lab. Day-to-day operations include maintaining cultures of lab organisms (phytoplankton, zooplankton, zooplankton parasites, and fish), training and supervising undergraduate workers, ensuring compliance with environmental safety standards, purchasing and receiving supplies, maintaining lab protocols and equipment, and keeping the physical lab spaces organized. The position is initially funded for 12 months but may be extended based on the needs of the lab and available funding. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies Demonstrated interest in community and/or disease ecology and sufficient scientific background to effectively manage lab experiments and field surveys. Excellent time management, organization, communication, and leadership skills. Demonstrate both excellent attention to detail and ability to keep track of multiple ongoing projects. Physical Demands Willingness and sufficient physical fitness to conduct field work under adverse conditions. For ponds and reservoir sampling, the incumbent will need to load a 50-80 lb. kayak in and out of a truck and use sampling gear while on the water. Field work at terrestrial grassland sites takes place under full sun. At times this position also involves long hours at a computer, workbench, or microscope. Driving to perform job related tasks.
