Work is varied and ranges from long days spent in the field to data entry and office work. Monitoring activities may include a strenuous bicycle ride (up to 12 miles/day) with field equipment to and along the beach. Field work is often conducted in harsh conditions that will include heat, cold, biting insects, wind, rain, and soft sand.The successful applicant will have a flexible schedule, working 40 hours per week with two full days off per week. Little St. Simons Island, Georgia, is an 11,000-acre private barrier island that is only accessible by boat. Access to the mainland is limited and is not guaranteed on the intern’s time off.The intern’s responsibilities include assisting with ongoing management, conservation, and research projects:Prescribed burn management within the grasslands of the island.Road, trail, and viewshed maintenance. This ongoing land management work can include operating manual and motorized equipment to prune brush, clear brush, and trim grass and vegetation. Participate in green infrastructure projects (e.g. living shoreline).Assist with the construction and repair of existing boardwalks, wildlife viewing towers, and bridges.Clear brush and debris, especially following intense storms.Monitor road and trail conditions and deploy signage to communicate closures.Shorebird migration and wintering surveys. Surveys may include International Shorebird Survey (ISS), Red Knot migration survey, Piping Plover band resighting, and American Oystercatcher band resighting.Data entry from various recent projects.Weekly bird surveys at the Myrtle Pond water impoundment.Raccoon population management. This includes setting, baiting, and checking live traps.Large mammal monitoring using a game camera array.Clean, organize, and maintain equipment and equipment storage.Write content for social media outlets, newsletters, and reports. Qualifications:A high school diploma is required. A bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, forestry, or a related field is preferred. Prescribed burn/fire crew experience is preferred (e.g. participation in burns as a volunteer or on a burn crew, fire safety and prescribed burn coursework). The ideal candidate should have a foundational knowledge of hand tools, chainsaws, power tools, and basic carpentry skills. Previous fieldwork experience is a plus. The candidate must be in excellent physical condition and able to tolerate biting insects. Candidates must be a self-starter and be able to work both independently and as a team. Candidates should be enthusiastic, positive, and be able to communicate effectively.
