Job Description:

General Position Summary

The Land Stewardship Coordinator works to further the organization’s mission as it relates to implementing on-the-ground conservation work and outreach initiatives. The Land Stewardship Coordinator is a position for those wanting to become more involved with the Operations, Maintenance, Conservation, Mapping, Activation, Outreach, and Monitoring of conserved Wolf River lands and the Wolf River Greenway.

Position Status: Full-time

Reports to: Director of Land Conservation

 

Annual Monitoring

• Schedules and performs annual monitoring field or aerial visits for conserved properties (typically January thru April).

• Completes monitoring reports in a timely fashion and stores reports, monitoring files, and baseline updates on all conserved properties.

• Communicates with landowners about upcoming visits, follow up issues or required reports, and the reserved rights.

• Reports conservation easement violations and threats along with landowner issues.

• Tracks and keeps record of activity approvals and denials, amendments to conservation easements, property transfers, changes in contact information or ownership, as well as monitoring records and other stewardship.

Land Stewardship

• Creates or updates management plans for all fee-owned properties.

• Implements actions prescribed in the management plans.

• Stewards the Wolf River Greenway trail by identifying and reporting hazards and infrastructure needs, clearing sightlines, upkeeping arboretum signs, maintaining unpaved trails, and refilling Greenway brochure holders.

• Coordinates with contractors for land management.

• Works with TDEC and TWRA as applicable to assist in land stewardship of Wolf River sites (e.g., boardwalk repair, invasive species removal, litter pickup, etc).

• Tracks impact metrics (e.g., trees planted, acreage treated, etc.) and reports to Outreach Coordinator.

• Leads groups of volunteers at community service projects.

GIS Mapping

• Maintains GIS database for protected properties, reserved rights areas, and Wolf River Greenway.

• Produces maps for property inspections, new land projects, and Wolf River Greenway.

• Produces graphically pleasing maps both large and small that communicate our mission and/or the Greenway project.

 

Organization Background

The Wolf River Conservancy (WRC) is an accredited nonprofit land trust organized in 1985 with a mission “to the protection and enhancement of the Wolf River and its watershed as a sustainable natural resource." Through the cooperation of landowners and the generosity of the local community, the Conservancy has protected thousands of acres of sensitive wetlands which provide habitats for a diversity of plants and wildlife species and better ensure a high-quality water system of surface streams and the Memphis Sand Aquifer below. Lands have been protected by means of direct purchases, donations, and conservation easements.

The Conservancy is accredited by the Land Trust Alliance which recognizes land conservation organizations that meet national standards for excellence, uphold the public trust, and ensure conservation efforts are permanent.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or comparable experience in environmental science, natural resources, forestry, parks and recreation, or other applicable field; Prior experience and training may be substituted.

• Outstanding written, verbal, and time management skills and attention to detail.

• Proficiency utilizing Microsoft Office (word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail) and Adobe Suite products.

• Must be able to multitask projects and work with a diversity of people.

• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission of the Conservancy.

• Willingness to learn new skills both in the field and on the computer.

• Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.

• Some experience with plant identification.

• Must be willing to work evenings and weekends as assigned (flexible schedule offered to offset weekend/evening work).

 

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 1 year of comparable experience.

• Knowledge of land conservation, parks and recreation planning, natural resource science, land management, hunting and trapping, land use planning, agricultural and forestry, and/or best management practices is a plus.

• Prior experience in leading volunteers.
