Job Description:

The Biology Department in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of North Dakota (UND) is seeking a 9-month, tenure-track, Assistant Professor specializing in Mammal Ecology starting August 16, 2023, contingent upon available funding. The Department of Biology is an academic unit in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of North Dakota. It serves over 500 undergraduate majors and >25 graduate students. In addition to teaching, our faculty members are involved in research programs that address fundamental and applied questions in the biological sciences. UND oversees four field stations in the region that serve to enhance numerous regional fieldbased teaching and research opportunities for our students and faculty. The department offers graduate degrees through the Ph.D. and active training of graduate students is expected. The Fisheries and Wildlife program boasts an active student population that has received numerous recognitions from The Wildlife Society and whose students go on to work for state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and other conservation organizations. The department has a history of strong relationships with local, state, federal and nongovernmental organizations. To strengthen the wildlife aspect of the program, we seek a broadly trained Mammal Ecologist. We especially encourage applications from candidates with expertise in field studies combined with strong data analytical skills, ecological modeling, and/or disease ecology. The University of North Dakota (UND) is a public research university established in 1883. The University is centrally located between the North Dakota and Minnesota lakes regions and numerous year-round recreation opportunities exist in the region.

Qualifications:

Required Competencies

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

• Ability to teach, mentor, and inspire students in the department

• Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse students, staff,

faculty, and colleagues at UND and throughout the region

• Ability to implement high-impact teaching practices in a variety of learning environments

• Ability to contribute to the department’s Fisheries and Wildlife program and contribute to research

strengths in the Ecology of the Northern Great Plains (e.g., ecological modeling, disease ecology)

• Ability to contribute to UND Grand Challenges or other campus-wide initiatives

Minimum Requirements

• Ph.D. in Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Conservation Biology, or related discipline

• Successful completion of Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

• Research experience in mammal ecology

• Relevant postdoctoral experience

• Experience obtaining extramural research funding

• Experience working with graduate students in research

• Experience teaching undergraduate or graduate courses related to mammal ecology and wildlife

conservation and management

• Experience working with a variety of stakeholders (e.g., state and federal agencies, non-governmental,

landowners, industry)

Miscellaneous:

Duties & Responsibilities

• Establish a productive and extramurally funded research program that works with relevant federal,

regional, state, or local agencies.

• Contribute to one or more UND Grand Challenge research focus areas (https://und.edu/research/grandchallenges/). These include energy and environmental sustainability, human health, rural health and

communities, autonomous systems, security, and big data. UND is investing resources to support

research in these areas.

• Contribute to department research strengths in the Ecology of the Northern Great Plains.

• Provide mammal-focused expertise to enhance our 4+1 B.S/M.S., M.S., and Ph.D. graduate programs in

Biology.

• Contribute to the undergraduate Biology and Fisheries & Wildlife Programs via teaching, advising, and

providing undergraduate research experiences.

• Pre-tenure teaching duties will be equivalent to two courses per year for at least three years. Courses

will be selected from departmental offerings related to mammal ecology and wildlife conservation and

management.

This is a 9-month, tenure-track position beginning August 16, 2023
