Job Description:

The University of Georgia, Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources is offering a full-time seasonal position conducting camera trap surveys of mesocarnivores in Georgia. This position begins July 31, 2023, and will end in mid-December. The employee will assist with research evaluating camera trapping survey designs with the overall goal of identifying a protocol that increases the efficiency of mesocarnivore monitoring across the state. Activities will include, but are not limited to, setting and maintaining 120 wildlife camera traps, examining efficacy of bait types and camera trap setup, and organizing and processing camera trap data. The project will be based out of Athens, GA, with field work taking place in Coopers Creek Wildlife Management Area located in the north Georgia mountains. The technician will spend every other week in the field setting and maintaining cameras. Weeks not in the field will be spent performing data entry in Athens, GA. Lodging will be covered while deployed in the field, and travel to study sites will be provided by a state vehicle. Applicant is responsible for their lodging while not deployed in the field.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

1) A valid class C driver's license

2) Comfortable performing data entry and other computer-based work

3) Applicants should be in good physical condition and able to work in hot, humid field conditions where encounters with snakes, biting insects, etc. are possible

 

Preferred Qualifications:

1) College-level coursework in ecology, wildlife biology, or a related field

2) Experience setting camera traps in the field and processing camera trap images

3) Strong communication and organization skills

4) Experience hiking short distances, operating a chainsaw, and driving a 4WD vehicle

Salary:
$12.75/hour for 40 hrs/week
