Job Description, Responsibilities and Required Qualifications or Skills

Under general supervision, the incumbent will support the GADNR Coastal Resources Division, Coastal Management Section’s Shellfish and Water Quality Program which manages the growth and commercial/recreational harvest of shellfish (oysters and clams) in Georgia waters, and monitors water quality for shellfish harvest and beach swimming. 

Specifically, this position will provide data management for shellfish mariculture (farming) activities, including record keeping, data analysis, reporting and maintaining or modernizing data portals and systems; assist with surveying and GIS mapping of in-water shellfish lease areas and maintaining GIS dashboards and applications; serve as the lead UAV pilot including maintenance and oversite for all shellfish program UAV equipment; coordinate with state and federal permitting agencies (e.g., GA Department of Agriculture, US Army Corps of Engineers); and communicate routinely with commercial shellfish growers, academia groups and the general public. 

This position will also assist with the planning and execution of oyster restoration activities in recreational shellfish harvest areas, special assignments and outreach and education activities. The position requires year round vessel-based activities working in coastal environments and may involve work in inclement weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Work experience in coastal or environmental resource management, shellfish biology or related.
  • Experience with managing datasets and database platforms (i.e., Access, Excel and web-based data entry applications).
  • Experience with ArcGIS/ArcPro GIS software, mapping and web-based applications. (i.e., dashboards and apps) in a college/university or professional capacity.
  • Experience with the operation and maintenance of UAV equipment.
  • Experience with boating and navigation in coastal waters including basic vessel maintenance
