Job Description:

The Silviculture Laboratory at the Forestry, Ecology, and Wildlife Program at Alabama A&M University is seeking a graduate student (M.S.) to conduct research on factors influencing the patterns of the natural regeneration of shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata Mill.) – a valuable southern pine species that has experienced significant range-wide population declines over the last several decades. The successful applicant will evaluate the relationships of shortleaf pine seedling occurrences with the proximities to crop trees and seed productions, as well as analyze the effects of soil, topography, climate, and moisture availability on the natural regeneration of the species. Initial fieldwork will focus on mixed pine-hardwood stands of the Cumberland Plateau. Fieldwork will include counting the number of seedlings, recording the locations of mature trees, and quantifying cones/seeds of shortleaf pine.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related field. Applicants must have a strong desire to work in the field and laboratory and are expected to publish their research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at professional conferences. Previous experience with research and data analysis using statistical software (R and/or SAS) are preferred. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. The applicant must also possess a valid driver's license.

Miscellaneous:

Financial support is available for two and a half years and includes a stipend ($20,000 per year). Partial tuition support may also be available for the first year. Ideally, this position will start in Fall 2023. In order to be eligible for financial support, students should be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident. Minority students are encouraged to apply.
