Employer University of West Georgia Job Description, Responsibilities and Required Qualifications or Skills The Edelman research lab at the University of West Georgia is seeking a highly qualified and motivated M.S. student to join their team. The focus of the thesis research is to study the distribution, habitat use, and seasonal activity of the bats, particularly the endangered northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis), in coastal Alabama. This project will use acoustic monitoring and habitat assessments to quantify bat activity across seasons and habitats in the Gulf Coastal Plain. Responsibilities include: - Deploy and maintain acoustic detectors across remote field sites - Conduct extensive fieldwork in forested and coastal environments - Flexible schedule including seasonal field effort - Process and analyze bat acoustic data using software - Manually vet call identifications and manage large datasets - Conduct vegetation and habitat measurements - Assist with GIS-based habitat analyses - Contribute to reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed manuscripts B.S. in biology, wildlife ecology, or related field with at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale Must meet all eligibility requirements for employment in U.S. Strong experience in ecological/wildlife research at the undergraduate or post-baccalaureate level Excellent quantitative, writing, and oral communication skills Ability to work independently and as part of a team Willingness to spend time at remote locations Ability to hike across rough terrain under a variety of weather conditions while hauling heavy equipment Orienteering skills including use of maps, compass, and GPS. Job Field: Wildlife Job Type: Full Time Assistantship Location Detail: Carrollton, Georgia & Coastal Alabama Salary: $18,000 per year combined between GRA & summer pay Job Benefits: A 10-month research assistantship for working on the thesis project, including a stipend based on 20 hours/week and a tuition waiver, is provided by UWG for the fall 2026 and spring 2027 semesters. Summer pay is available for two years at $8,000 per year, pending final grant contract approval expected within the next few weeks. The second-year salary will be contingent on the student applying for available graduate teaching assistantships ($10,000 with a tuition waiver). A 4x4 truck and dorm housing at Weeks Bay Research Reserve will be provided for field research.
