Job Description, Responsibilities and Required Qualifications or Skills

The Edelman research lab at the University of West Georgia is seeking a highly qualified and motivated M.S. student to join their team. The focus of the thesis research is open and will be determined based on the student’s interest and experience, available resources/collaborations, and alignment with the lab research goals (Improving knowledge and management of rare vertebrates, particularly mammals in the southeast). Available lab resources include access to a 4WD truck, mammalian live traps, game cameras, acoustic monitors, insect traps, habitat measurement equipment, and telemetry equipment. A 10-month research assistantship for working on the thesis project, including a stipend based on 20 hours/week and a tuition waiver, is provided for the fall 2025 and spring 2026 semesters. Summer and the second-year salary is contingent on the student applying for available graduate teaching assistantships. The selected individual will enroll in the graduate program of the Biology Program at the University of West Georgia beginning August 2025.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in biology, wildlife ecology, or related field with at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Must meet all eligibility requirements for employment in U.S.
  • Strong experience in ecological/wildlife research at the undergraduate or post-baccalaureate level
  • Excellent quantitative, writing, and oral communication skills
  • Willingness to spend time at remote locations
  • Ability to hike across rough terrain under a variety of weather conditions while hauling heavy equipment
  • Orienteering skills including use of maps, compass, and GPS.
  • Ability to drive 4WD vehicle

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic training in GIS and statistics

Job Benefits:
