Job Description:

The Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management at Oklahoma State University is hiring 3 field technicians to assist with research on mule deer in western Oklahoma. These positions have somewhat flexible start and end times with potential availability as early as April and as late as September; however, the bulk of the work will be conducted in May, June, and July. 

 

Successful applicants will assist 2 graduate students with capture and radio-marking of mule deer neonates, monitoring survival of neonates using radio telemetry, and investigating mortality sites to assess cause-specific mortality of neonates. Other duties throughout the season may include retrieval of camera traps, tagging camera trap images, data entry, and equipment maintenance. Some work responsibilities may require walking long distances over rough terrain or under low-light conditions. Successful applicants should be able to demonstrate their ability to interact with private landowners respectfully and capably. Successful applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record. Field challenges may include biting/stinging insects, variable weather conditions (high heat and winds), and rattlesnake encounters. Thus, successful applicants should be prepared to take preventative measures to ensure personal safety in the field. Additionally, successful applicants should demonstrate the ability to follow directions, work well in team settings and independently, and maintain a positive disposition. 

 

Shared lodging is provided on Wildlife Management Areas. Lodging is somewhat remote as the nearest substantial towns are approximately 30-45 minutes away. Housing will consist of rooms with bunk beds, as well as a shared living room, kitchen, and full bathroom. Successful applicants will be responsible for their own food (obtained in town). Wi-Fi will usually be accessible at the fieldhouses. Successful applicants should expect the shared lodging to include coed living situations. Work trucks will be provided. 

Qualifications:

·       Have or are currently working towards a B.S. in a wildlife-related field 

·       This research will take place primarily on private lands, so the ability to conduct respectful interactions with landowners and managers is essential

·       Organizational skills and detail-oriented mindset (for data entry and following research protocols) 

·       Experience conducting field work 

·       Willingness to work in a variety of weather conditions and terrain 

·       Willingness to work independently or in teams 

·       A valid driver’s license
