Job Description:

Responsibilities:

  • Utilize the Potential Operational Delineations (POD) concept and framework to plan the location and configuration of fuels treatments that serve to accomplish wildfire response and forest health objectives across ownership boundaries.
  • Fosters good working relations with DNR Staff, the community and adjacent landowners by being transparent about our operations and consulting with adjacent landowners and external stakeholders through various means including field site visits, and written and oral communication.
  • Recommends treatment options tailored to site conditions that ensures forest resiliency to fire and insects based on site knowledge, forest practices rules, internal and external regulations, DNR’s Habitat Conservation Plan, and budgetary guidelines. Analyzes data from models and inventory to evaluate proper silviculture treatments including reforestation and timely vegetation management to achieve acceptable survival, site occupancy and maximum tree growth rates.
  • Creates high quality standardized GIS map products utilizing local mapping protocols and ArcGIS/SUMA in consultation with GIS specialists, for external stakeholders, as well as for permits (ex. FPA), approvals (ex. Prescribed Burn Plans), and other purposes as needed.
  • Enforces Agency safety guidelines as well as L&I and OSHA rules related to employee activities in the workplace. Even though safety accounts for 2% of the duties it will be in the fore front of all position duties, 100% of the time
Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: 

  • At a minimum must be certified as a Firefighter 2 (FFT2) per the NWCG Standards for Wildland Fire Position Qualifications (PMS 310-1).
  • Experience with forest mensuration and survey tools such as GPS, laser measurement devices, compass, clinometer, and other forestry equipment.
  • Associates Degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, Earth Sciences OR 2 years of equivalent experience working in a forested environment.
  • Competent in the use of ArcGIS, standard Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) programs and mobile devices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

Working Conditions:

  • Must pass the work capacity test annually at the arduous level and maintain an Incident Qualifications Card (“red card”).
  • Must meet NWCG Standards for Wildland Fire Position Qualifications (PMS 310-1) for Burn Boss Type 3 (RXB3) within 24 months of appointment to this position.
  • A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
  • Employees of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are required to complete their primary series of COVID-19 vaccines (be fully vaccinated against COVID-19) or be approved for a medical or religious exemption and accommodation as a condition of employment.   • Desired Qualifications: 
  • A Bachelor's degree in forestry, fire ecology, natural resource sciences, or a closely related field and 2 years of professional experience; or a similar associate's degree with 4 years of professional experience.
  • Currently hold the qualification of RXB3.
  • Knowledge of fire ecology of Eastern Washington forested landscapes, fuels management techniques, and prescribed fire planning.
  • Experience working with and knowledge of the capabilities for heavy equipment used in logging, forest road construction, and wildland fire response.
Salary:
$48,156.00 - $64,788.00 Annually
