Job Description:

You will serve as the Indiana Army National Guard Training Site Natural Resources Technician. The position is located at the Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center, Edinburgh, Indiana. The incumbent will execute components of the Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP) for the 35,000-acre training center and the 1,000 acre-Muscatatuck Urban Training Center. The position is heavily focused on supporting the management of resources found at the training sites.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Work closely with the IN Army National Guard Biologist, Forester, Cultural Resource Manager, Land Foreman and other Environmental Division staff to implement various components of the Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP).

• Collect field data under the direction of senior staff.

• Collect and record biological data from harvested game animals.

• Conduct flora and fauna surveys.

• Assist with Forest Stand Improvement (FSI) projects.

• Assist with wetland delineations.

• Write reports documenting observations made in the field; make complex conclusions and recommendations.

• Participate in prescribed fire planning and execution.

• Apply pesticides as necessary to achieve conservation goals and objectives.

• Plan, coordinate, and execute field projects in support of the INRMP.

• Provide direction to field crews composed of staff, seasonal employees, and Indiana Dept. of Corrections laborers in execution of field projects.

• Operate all required field equipment in a safe manner and perform field maintenance as needed.

• Diagnose, report, and assist the Land Management Foreman with equipment issues as they occur.

• Fill out and file necessary forms and reports in support of work efforts.

• Assist with nuisance animal control as needed.

• Coordinate as needed with staff from other directorates within the agency as well as staff from other State and Federal agencies.

Qualifications:

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, wildlife biology, ecology, forestry, environmental science, or closely related discipline is preferred. Associate degree in a related field will be considered. Applicable experience may substitute for the education requirements.

• Must have high school diploma or HSE (high school equivalency).

• Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.

• Must be able to obtain a military issue CAC for computer use.

• Indiana Department of Corrections Work Crew Boss certification (training provided).

• Possess or obtain pesticide license of RT or greater (training provided).

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

• Working knowledge of natural resources management principles and common practices.

• Working knowledge of Federal, State, DoD, Army and National Guard Natural Resource regulations, instructions and technical letters and knowledge of the Federal and DoD Natural Resource programs.

• Ability to perform public speaking, training, and dialog with non-environmental, military personnel.

• Ability to write for understanding, including technical reports, interagency correspondence, and interagency agreements.

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds several times a day.

• Ability to carry a 40-pound pack in adverse weather conditions and rough terrain

• Ability to stand or stoop for extended periods.

• Computer skills and knowledge of relevant software (MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint etc.).

• Knowledge of and operating experience with GPS & GIS software.

• Knowledge of military land use requirements.

• Knowledge of agricultural/land management equipment such as tractors, skid steers, and implements.

• Knowledge of hand operated equipment such weed eaters & chainsaws.

• General maintenance and carpentry skills.
