Job Description:

YOUR POSITION WITH TNC

The Land Protection Specialist leads land protection projects in the southeast region of North Carolina with a focus on the Sandhills. This position will be supervised by the Longleaf Applied Scientist and will work closely with the Director of Land Protection for the Southeast program. This is a three-year, time-limited position. Work may be from ~21 hours per week to full time (35 hours/week), depending on availability of successful applicant. This position qualifies for TNC’s generous benefits package.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Land Protection Specialist will engage in the following activities:

· Help to refine land protection plans

· Establish relationships with landowners and advance land protection projects

· Initiate land and/or conservation easement appraisals and perform all due diligence associated with land protection projects

· Write and review grants for land protection and perform necessary due diligence should funds be awarded

· Become proficient in TNC Standard Operating Procedures for Land Protection projects

· Other duties as assigned, including assisting with land management activities

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

· Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development and fundraising targets.

· Networks with diverse stakeholders including landowners, conservation partners, and government officials to pursue land protection goals.

· May work under minimal and/or distant supervision; may make independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.

· May work in variable weather conditions, at locations across southeast North Carolina, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

· BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and 1 year related experience in land conservation, real estate, or land management or equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Excellent spoken and written communication skills.

· Excellent time management skills and strong attention to detail

· Experience interacting with people from diverse backgrounds.

· Strong interpersonal skills related to building trusted relationships

· Proficiency using Microsoft Office software.

· Ability to be part of a dynamic team that sets and achieves lofty conservation goals.

· Must have a valid driver's license.

 

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

· Experience working with private landowners

· Experience with grant writing.

· Working knowledge of advanced principles of GIS, experience using ArcPro software, and proficiency in the use of field data collection software.

· Ability to work extra hours when needed.

· Familiarity with the ecology and plant and animal species of the longleaf pine ecosystem and the principles and practices of longleaf pine habitat protection, restoration and management.

· Knowledge of Sandhills landscape, and familiarity with landowners and projects

· Ability to complete tasks independently.

· Master’s degree in Conservation Science, Planning, Forestry, or other related field.
