Beasley named Terrell Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Management

Authored by:

The University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources has appointed Dr. James Beasley as the Terrell Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Management, following approval by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents in January 2025.

Since joining UGA’s faculty in 2012, Beasley has also held an appointment at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory. He is internationally recognized for his research in wildlife ecology and conservation, particularly in the control of invasive species and the conservation of carnivores. He is regarded as one of the world’s leading experts on invasive wild pigs, having built one of the most important academic research programs in the United States dedicated to their study.

"Dr. Beasley’s research has influenced wildlife conservation efforts worldwide, and his dedication to mentoring students ensures that impact will continue for generations. His appointment to this professorship is a testament to his contributions to both Warnell and the field at large," said J. Todd Petty, dean of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources.

Beasley’s research focuses on wildlife population dynamics, invasive species management, and human-wildlife interactions. His work has had a global impact, from studying the conservation of African carnivores to carrying out research and advising on the ecological impacts and recovery in nuclear-affected regions such as Chernobyl and Fukushima. He has published more than 210 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, authored two books on invasive species management, and delivered a TEDx talk on his research.

"Being selected for this professorship is a tremendous honor," said Beasley. "I am grateful to Mr. Terrell for his generous contribution and to Warnell’s leadership for establishing this position, ensuring Mr. Terrell’s legacy will have a lasting impact on wildlife conservation and management."

In addition to his research, Beasley teaches wildlife ecology and management courses and mentors students in scientific studies.

His contributions have earned numerous accolades, including UGA’s Lamar Dodd Creative Research Award and Fred C. Davison Early Career Award, as well as Warnell’s Alumni Association Faculty Award for Research and Herrick Superior Teaching Award. He has also received honors from professional societies, including The Wildlife Society’s Publication Award for Edited Book, Book of the Year from the National Wildlife Research Center, and recognition as an Early Career Fellow with the Ecological Society of America.

"This professorship will provide critical resources to expand my research program and mentor the next generation of conservation leaders," Beasley added. "It will allow us to tackle pressing global challenges in wildlife conservation while equipping students with the skills to make a lasting impact in the field."

The Terrell Professorship of Wildlife Management was established in 2018 to honor Charles W. Terrell, whose 1990 donation of timberland in Grady County supported research, teaching, and service in natural resource management at the Warnell School.
