What does the job do?

 

This position will act as the regional representative on a Department team that plans, implements and coordinates wildlife habitat restoration, enhancement and monitoring projects on federal, state and private lands throughout New Mexico, using Department programs and utilizing the most appropriate and biologically sound management techniques and activities. In addition, this position will strategically evaluate plans which have an effect on wildlife habitat, such as environmental impact statements and environmental assessments, and provide appropriate recommendations and mitigation approaches when necessary.

 

How?

 

Coordinate activities with Regional Wildlife Biologists, Regional Private Land Specialists, Species Managers, Habitat Stamp Program Manager, Wildlife Management Areas Project Coordinator, District Officers and other Department personnel to prioritize, design, and implement wildlife habitat restoration, protection, and monitoring projects across federal, state, and private lands. Coordinate and leverage multiple habitat restoration funds, including but not limited to Habitat Stamp Program funds and Big Game Enhancement funds.

 

Evaluate environmental assessments, environmental impact statements, and other planning documents from public agencies and private entities for their impacts on wildlife and wildlife habitat, and recommend appropriate mitigation measures if necessary.

 

Maintain positive working relationships and good public relations with federal and state agencies, private landowners, and non-governmental organizations regarding the Department’s long term wildlife habitat management programs, and with the general public and sports-persons by answering any questions regarding Department policies, regulations, hunting seasons and general program information.

 

Review current scientific research related to wildlife ecology and habitat management, and apply research results and recommendations through program implementatio

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualification

 

Bachelor's degree in biology, fisheries science/management, wildlife science/management, animal science, forestry, ecology or similar related natural resource degree and two (2) years of experience in the specified fields.

 

The ideal candidate will have the following:

 

-At least 2 years of experience directly related to wildlife, forestry, ecology, biology and/or habitat restoration

 

-Experience evaluating habitats and developing restoration ideas to benefit free-ranging wildlife species such as such as mule deer, elk, quail, and wild turkey

 

-Experience in implementing projects in collaboration with both state and federal land managers interested in wildlife habitat

 

-Experience in applying principles of southwest fire ecology as it relates to wildlife habitat

 

-Experience in using ArcPro, ArcMap, ArcGISonline, and other ESRI products

Salary:
$43,954 - $70,326 Annually, Mid-Point $57,140. Dependent upon qualifications.
