Job Description:

This is a fantastic opportunity to lead monitoring of the two Federally listed subspecies of beach mice that occur along the beautiful Atlantic coast of Florida, the Anastasia Island beach mouse (Peromyscus polionotus phasma) and Southeastern beach mouse (Peromyscus polionotus niveiventris). The Wildlife Diversity Conservation Section is seeking a highly motivated biologist to fill an OPS Biological Scientist II position to monitor both subspecies of beach mice and work with other FWC staff to provide management recommendations to various Federal, State, and County partners.

 

The biologist will work collaboratively with other FWC biologists and partner agencies to apply an adaptive management framework each year to assess the information collected and produce appropriate recommendations for revising management protocols. The biologist will also collect and interpret data to inform potential translocation activities to advance species recovery. Duties include, but are not limited to, establishment of monitoring stations, collection of mammal population data, assessment of beach mouse habitat, data management, basic data analysis, and assisting with authoring technical reports. The biologist will also assist partners and conduct other duties, as necessary.

 

Working hours: 40 hours per week, work schedule may vary.

Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences is required. A degree in wildlife science, natural resource management, ecology, or similar is preferred.

 

A valid driver’s license is necessary for this position.

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

Knowledge: Of wildlife ecology principals and techniques; mammalian population biology and conservation, habitat assessment techniques, and data collection methods. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, rules, and policies is preferred.

 

Skills: In the safe and proper use of scientific and field equipment, including 4-wheel drive and off-road vehicles; techniques for capturing, handling, and monitoring small mammals; plant identification; vegetation and habitat surveying techniques; recording and organizing data; handheld GPS navigation; excellent all-around computer skills and proficiency with the suite of Microsoft programs; proficiency in the use of ArcGIS software is preferred.

 

Abilities: To efficiently organize information and manage projects; to work effectively with other agency staff members, partners and stake holders to implement conservation actions; to collect and analyze basic biological data; to work independently and, when necessary, to serve as a team leader; to work in difficult field conditions and isolated locations; to work a variable schedule to complete tasks and responsibilities in a timely manner; to conduct occasional night time field work; and to incur some overnight travel to complete job tasks.

 

 

The successful applicant will be enthusiastic and self-motivated to complete quality work on time and will demonstrate good communication abilities together with strong abilities to work independently with minimal supervision while also working as an effective team member.

Salary:
$18.42 per hour, full time, based on a maximum of 1,920 hours per fiscal year

This is an OPS position (Other Personnel Services) which means that employees are paid for the number of hours they work. OPS employees do not participate in the Florida Retirement System or receive formal paid leave. OPS employees have the potential to participate in health benefits.
