FWC’s Wildlife and Habitat Management Section is seeking a motivated applicant who is willing and able to work outdoors in a variety of conditions throughout the year in fulfillment of their job responsibilities. This OPS+ Biological Scientist III position works with a team of biologists and technicians to monitor natural communities and game populations on the Fitzhugh Carter Tract of Econfina Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA), Pine Log WMA, Point Washington WMA, and Juniper Creek WMA. The incumbent, under the direct supervision of an FWC District Wildlife Biologist, assists the Northwest Florida Water Management District and Florida Forest Service with tasks including surveying and monitoring game species and imperiled wildlife using scientifically accepted protocols. Conducts vegetation surveys including those of imperiled native flora and chemically treats invasive flora. Assists landowner with maintenance of public use infrastructure including roads, parking areas, kiosks, picnic facilities, trails, boat ramps, water control structures, fences, gates, and equipment maintenance/storage compound as needed. Manages hunting and public recreational use programs. Assists with wildlife disease surveillance and prescribed burning efforts. Analyzes and reports data to Water Management District and Forest Service staff. Assists and collaborates with staff on other conservation areas and provides technical assistance to individuals, organizations, and other government agencies regarding wildlife and habitat management. Participates in team meetings, seminars and workshops relating to wildlife resource management or other training opportunities. Provides presentations to conservation organizations, schools, and civic groups. Completes other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Knowledge and experience in conducting wildlife surveys with an emphasis on game species, analyzing data, and summarizing results.

Experience in the use of ArcGIS and GPS and its application.

Proficient writing skills.

Ability to operate and maintain 4WD vehicles and ATVs.

Ability to work independently and in a variety of weather conditions.

Ability to work efficiently in a team of diverse people with differing backgrounds.

Experience with supervision of others on the job.

Ability to plan and prioritize work assignments.

Ability to communicate effectively with external and internal customers.

Skill in use of Microsoft Office software (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, etc.)

Miscellaneous:

Working hours: 7:00 am to 4:00 pm (CST), Monday through Friday, may require some night or weekend duty. Occasional overnight travel is required.

List of any subordinates supervised: 1 OPS Biological Scientist II, 1 OPS Wildlife Technician, and 5-6 OPS check station operators.

Residency Requirement: Must reside within a 25-mile radius of Econfina Creek - Fitzhugh Carter Tract WMA.

Minimum Level of Education - bachelor’s degree in a life or physical science

License Requirements: Minimum Florida Class E driver's license

Salary:
22.15/hr
