Description of duties: The FWC’s South Region seeks a highly motivated biologist to assist with a variety of wildlife and habitat management goals on the Dinner Island Ranch Wildlife Management Area (WMA), for the Wildlife and Habitat Management section within the Division of Habitat and Species Conservation. This is a field-oriented position and primary duties include land management activities (e.g., prescribed burning, firebreak preparation, treating invasive vegetation), hunter check station operation (including collection of biological samples), water level monitoring, wildlife surveys (e.g., Crested Caracara, herpetofauna), and assisting the lead area biologist with projects as needed. Other responsibilities include dove field preparation, native tree/shrub planting, collecting and entering wildlife survey data, writing reports, equipment maintenance, custodial functions, and other activities as assigned. The successful candidate must also occasionally attend regional and divisional meetings, various trainings, and assist on other management areas as needed.

 

 

 

About the WMA: Dinner Island Ranch WMA is in Hendry County, Florida and is approximately 21,740 acres. The WMA is home to a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, Florida panther, bobcat, sandhill crane, American alligator, Crested Caracara, Florida black bear, and many other unique species of plant and animal. Primary habitats include improved/semi-improved pasture, pine flatwoods, depression marsh, wet prairie, hardwood hammocks, and old agricultural fields. Prescribed burning, a cattle lease, and invasive plant control are three of the primary tools used to manage and improve the property for wildlife.

 

Qualifications:

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities: Must have knowledge of south Florida ecological communities, primarily in the “Greater Everglades Ecosystem”. Other necessary skills include the ability to navigate using GPS units and aerial maps. Must have the ability to operate specialized equipment, strong organizational skills, and experience in accurately collecting and organizing field data. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills are preferred. This job involves strenuous work with extreme subtropical weather conditions typical of south Florida and requires the incumbent to be in good physical condition and able to work outside year-round. Must be able to work as part of a team and must be able to work independently in the field once trained. Must be able to lift 50 pounds and walk or stand for extended time periods.

 

Level of Education: Bachelor’s degree with a major in one of the biological sciences.

 

Additional requirements: State of Florida driver’s license and reliable transportation to/from the job site.
