Job Description:

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is hiring a seasonal OPS technician (beginning of January – end of February 2023) to assist with a project assessing the breeding chronology of wild turkeys in south and south-central Florida. Fieldwork will be conducted near Immokalee and Yeehaw Junction FL. Duties include scouting and baiting trap sites daily, clearing and prepping trap sites, organizing and preparing trapping equipment and supplies, and trapping wild turkey, checking radio-tagged birds and deployment of autonomous recording units (ARU). Field conditions include inclement weather and multiple biting insects (mosquitos, ticks, chiggers, etc.). General conditions include pine flatwoods with minimal road access.

 

Qualifications:

Applicants preferably should have a background in wildlife field research and are working toward or have completed a B.S. in Wildlife Biology, Forestry, or a related field. Experience with turkey trapping and/or bleeding birds preferred. Applicants must be able to tolerate harsh environmental conditions, early mornings, and long hours. Applicants must also be able to operate 4x4 vehicles with and without trailers and ATVs. They must also be able to navigate using maps and GPS. Applicants must also be comfortable with working alone on the duties listed above. A valid U.S. driver’s license is required.

Miscellaneous:

WHAT IS OPS EMPLOYMENT? Other Personal Services (OPS) temporary employer/employee relationship used solely for accomplishing short term or intermittent tasks. OPS employees do not fill established positions and may not be assigned the duties of any vacant authorized position. OPS employees are at-will employees and are subject to actions such as pay changes, changes to work assignment and terminations at the pleasure of the agency head or designee.
