Job Description:

An exciting opportunity exists for a Fish and Wildlife Technician to join a team of employees within the Wildlife and Habitat Management Section in managing Big Bend WMA (Taylor and Dixie Counties), as well as other areas within Florida as required. FWC’s North Central Region is seeking a motivated applicant that is willing and able to work outdoors in a variety of conditions throughout the year in fulfillment of their job responsibilities to restore and enhance habitats for the benefit of a variety of wildlife and for the enjoyment of Florida residents and visitors. 

Responsibilities include: 

Assisting with the application of wildlife habitat management activities such as prescribed burning, fireline preparation, mowing, chopping, clearing, planting and chemical control of desirable and non-desirable vegetation. The employee will also be a key member of the WMA prescribed fire team and will be required to complete and maintain training required to serve as an independent crew member on prescribed burns and to serve as a Wildfire Strike Team Member in accordance with FWC’s Prescribed Burning and Wildfire Suppression Standards. 

Safely operate, maintain and repair equipment and vehicles including trucks, tractors, dozers, ATVs, boats, chainsaws, and various other heavy equipment in accordance with manufacturer and industry recommendations. Assure that FWC vehicles and equipment are maintained in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and that all fire-related equipment is maintained in continual fire-ready status. 

Maintain area facilities, such as roads, signs, kiosks, check stations, parking areas, water control structures, sheds, offices, and other infrastructure. Maintenance activities may require experience in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, and painting. Will also be responsible for keeping work compound, buildings, and equipment clean and organized. Assist with conducting wildlife and vegetation surveys and with operating check stations to collect wildlife harvest and hunter-use data at check stations. 

Submit bi-weekly timesheets, vehicle use reports, receipts and invoices, and periodic progress reports, accurately and on time. Assist with bid specifications, oversight of contracts, and obtaining quotes. Attend WMA, regional, and division coordination meetings and training programs. Perform additional duties as required by supervisor.

 

 

 

Qualifications:

H.S. Diploma or equivalent required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability and willingness to perform difficult physical work for extended and irregular periods, under adverse conditions and in various extremes of weather. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in an efficient and productive manner, and the ability to communicate with colleagues in a positive manner. Ability to safely, effectively, and proficiently use and maintain a variety of hand tools, vehicles, and equipment. Ability to plan and organize work assignments effectively and efficiently. Basic use of personal computers.

Individuals possessing a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License, Florida Certified Prescribed Burn Managers, and/or individuals properly trained to operate dozers for prescribed burning support and wildfire suppression are preferred.
